Browsing the boutique of my favourite auction house in Stuttgart – Eppli, I discovered three pieces that made my heart melt. Three Patek Philippe watches, from simple to complex, that can make any watch lover and collector happy. Very happy! The watches are Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3919, Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Ref. 3940 and the fabulous Patek Philippe Grand Complication Ref.3970. The pictures are not the best possible since I didn’t have a photo tenth with me, and the light was less than proper for good pictures.

This classic example of Patek’s elegance was purchased in February 2005. The good news is that after the revision, the watch was not used.

Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Ref. 3940
Consider one of the most important watches in the Patek’s modern history, the perpetual calendar Ref. 3940 is a fantastique beast. This watch was launched exclusively in yellow gold and it was available on the market in 1986. This reference is not in production anymore, being replaced by the more modern Ref. 5140. But the biggest surprise of this finding is that this watch is in the original, unopen package.
Launched more than thirty years ago, the Ref. 3940 was a rare bird with a cool complication and it is still loved by many purists. This modern classic is powered by a fabulous micro-rotor automatic calibre 240Q. More information about this calibre can be found here.

Patek Philippe Grand Complication Ref.3970
The last but not least, the Grand Complication Ref. 3970 is a magical piece: perpetual calendar with chronograph. Might not be the perfect watch, if I may joke: not automatic, the Ref. 3970 is a magnificent piece.
All produced Ref. 3970 come with a 36mm case and this particular comes with an open caseback. So it is possible to observe the beautiful calibre 27-70. Based on a Lemania movement 2310, the Cal. 27-70 is magnificent finished. It is said, that from all the brands that used this ebauche, Patek’s version is the most spectacular, in terms of finishes. Some interesting information about the movement can be found here.
