Review Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Mid-summer 2020, when we all started to think the epidemic nightmare is about to end soon (at least sooner), Carl F. Bucherer extends its Manero line with a new blue dial. The Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback is available with a blue textile strap and with a gorgeous metal bracelet. This is a short presentation of the watch.

The Lucerne-based watch brand has a history that goes back until 1888. Carl Friedrich Bucherer opened a jewellery and watch boutique and started history. His two sons followed him, strengthening so a name that will make history. More about information about the brand can be found on Wikipedia. Manero line is one of the six collections of the brand. This collection includes ladies and gents pieces, starting from simple time/date complication and reaching the highest level with tourbillon and perpetual calendar.

The Manero Flyback pieces presented today are part of a twelve, on-growing, series line launched in 2016. The variations consist of case and dial materials, dial colours and fitted strap/bracelet. This year’s piece comes with a nice dark blue dial, having as a choice the blue textile strap or the nine link Bucherer bracelet.

A classic watch, a classic case

Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback comes in a 43mm stainless steel case. The presentation is classic with a polished and brushed case, long and curved horns and a double domed sapphire crystal mounted on a raised bezel.

The very conservative look of the case is brought into the contemporary by a textile and leather strap in blue. I was immediately enchanted by this strap. Together with the blue dial, the entire watch is a “made in heaven” combination for the ones with a weakness for that colour.

The nine links bracelet is excellently executed: polished external links and brushed internal links. The watch is well balanced on the wrist and offers comfortable wear.

Fascinating in blue

The dial of the Manero Flyback comes with the traditional layout but highlighted this year by a dark shade of blue. I find blue as a dial colour for chronographs as one of  the most interesting shades and of course, I was thrilled by this version.

The Flyback’s dial layout is another classic touch and a “here to stay” for the CFB. It is split into three main regions. The central part presents the name and the logo of the dial and the main function of the watch. The second area, with a brushed finish, serves as time register for hours, minutes and central chrono seconds. The outer area, and the third part of the dial, serves as a tachymetric scale.

On the left side can be found the running seconds indication. The sub-dial features a circular pattern in a recessed area. The dauphine hand is hoovering over two registers: one with baton indices only and one featuring Arabic numerals for the tens of seconds.

On the right side is symmetrically placed the 30-minutes chrono-counter. The sub-dial presentation is identical, of course, the indexes are specific to the 30 minutes indication.

The lower side of the dial holds an aperture for the date. This opening has a chamfered edge highlighted by a white border – the colour of the dial printings. The scheme is black on white.

Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback is fitted with skeletonised and faceted dauphine hands. These are making a good pair with the polished steel three-dimensional and hand-applied hour indexes. The central chrono second’s hand is white lacquered. The dial offers good legibility. The watch’s face does not feature luminescent material.

Carl F. Bucherer Calibre CFB1970

Manero Flyback features the calibre CFB1970 based on a heavily modified 7750. The movement features a flyback chrono with column-wheel configuration and offers 42 hours of power reserve.

The finishes are quite compelling. Decorations are something on which Carl F. Bucherer excels. The visible movement is rich in details that can be individually observed. Note the blue accents of the column wheel.

Final notes

Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback in blue is an amazing watch. Beyond my love for blue dials (I know I am not the only one), the watch is well constructed and offers a good feel: visually and physically.

Now, some might argue that the watch size is quite large for this kind of classic appereance. I like this “enlarged” version. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the 33mm to 39 mm territory. But this more contemporary size looks good too. Plus, it offers the chance, for those that disregard the under 41mm pieces from the large wrist size perspective, to wear a classic looking piece.
