Chapter 1 – FESTIVE LIGHTS
After joyful, sun-filled days, the festivities begin as the light slowly fades and dusk draws night. Piaget invites its Society to gather for an evening full of expectation and emotion, lit up by an opening parade of shimmering lights. As the spirit of the crowd ignites, lanterns are released and soar high into the night, slowly drifting skyward to illuminate the scene below.
The Blissful Lights Set
The Blissful Lights set of jewels shimmer with myriad combinations of white and yellow diamonds, capturing the golden glow of the lanterns as they begin their celestial flight heavenward.
In the rarefied world of coloured diamonds, ‘fancy intense’ colours are gemmological marvels of the rarest order, especially in large-sized very pure crystals and those showing no fluorescence. Found in almost every colour of the rainbow, coloured diamonds are extremely rare. Only a tiny proportion display any discernable fancy colour, and of these, the chances of being graded as ‘intense’ are even more remote. The 10.12 carat intense yellow diamond in the necklace is a superb example whose qualities are set off to their maximum by the radiant cut specifically chosen for this gem. Combining the brilliance of a round cut with the angular purity of an emerald cut, the radiant cut allows the diamond to take in and then reflect a large amount of light, offering better brilliance and creating the brightest of sparkles. In a unique design pioneered by the Piaget Atelier, taking craftsmen more than one year of conception and design development work, and then a further 280 hours to manufacture, this precious diamond is also detachable. It can be transformed into a ring by clipping it into a special mounting using an invisible device whose every detail has been conceived and executed with ingenuity, allowing the necklace to be worn in alternative configurations. This avant-garde approach and inventiveness sits squarely within Valentin Piaget’s motto for the great Maison, echoing his request to keep innovation central to the creation of every jewel. Matching radiant-cut intense yellow diamonds also feature in the Blissful Lights earrings and ring, making this exceptional suite of gems across the set almost impossible to replicate or match. With a characteristic eye for detail, the mount for the centre diamond in the Blissful Lights ring has an open-work design, allowing light to flood in and showcase the sheer quality and beauty of this gem as it flares outwards in an explosion of brilliance.
The Blazing Night Set
As the sky above darkens, traditional red lanterns are released, sending sparkles of crimson skyward, like fiery embers. In the Blazing Night necklace, 12 magnificent rubies from Mozambique and Thailand are set as a starburst, their pear-shaped cuts echoing the graceful arc of the lanterns as they glide skyward, their vivid red hues emoting the passion of the crowd below. Reflecting out in a radiant shape, the necklace design is developed further in the splendid cuff watch, a prime example of Piaget’s triumph over technical functionality as well as aesthetic design. Together with the ring and a distinctive asymmetric ear cuff, the sui generis jewels of the Blazing Night set each stands as virtuoso, one-off creations.
The set of rubies used across the suite took several years to source, and represent the finest possible mix of natural, unheated red colour and eye-clean clarity, meeting Piaget’s ever-exacting standards. The mantra of the Maison’s gemmologist remains that ‘to find better gems we would have to travel to another planet’. In the pursuit of perfection, some of the pear-shapes, already the rarest shape for rubies, have been recut to ensure a faultless outline and proportion, while each of the diamond baguettes in the design are also custom cut to fit the dedicated space perfectly. In the realization of these ambitious designs, the necklace alone took expert craftsmen an astonishing 400 hours of work at the bench, and the cuff watch a further 250 hours.
Chapter 2 – MAGICAL LIGHTS
As a natural lightshow begins, the sky becomes a theatre of technicolour. Driven by solar winds, the aurora borealis sweep silently through the atmosphere, catapulting streaks and bursts of colour into the heavens, flaring, fading and flaring once more in a kaleidoscope of shimmering hues.
The Magical Aurora Set
The jewels of the Magical Aurora set seem charged with the energy of this heavenly spectacle, answering these showers of light with glittering illuminations of their own. Each piece within the set is entirely individual, a unique creation akin to no other.
As the centre stone of the necklace, a magnificent 16.84-carat Colombian emerald, a truly rare, ultra-clean crystal, dazzles and dances in homage to nature’s light show, matching its vibrancy and vivacity of in every way. For the finest coloured gemstones, place of origin often holds the key to beauty. Birthplace is a particularly crucial element of any emerald’s quality, and since their discovery in the 1500s, those pulled from the earth of Colombia have long been heralded for their exceptional colour.
Emerald’s unique two-phase formation process almost always sets up internal stress within the growing crystal, resulting in inclusions and lower clarity, making this large example of intense colour and superb transparency an exceedingly precious rarity. The most suitable growth conditions requires nature’s blessing, but the technical expertise of the lapidary charged with turning the rough into a substantial, significant gem is no less crucial, and nor is its setting. Given their inherent fragility, only a master craftsman, in this case with more than 15 years of experience, will have the skill necessary to securely set the stone without damaging it. With its perfectly proportioned square cut, this emerald presents as the ultimate gem in every respect. The centre emeralds in the ring and earrings, equally endowed with the special qualities of their provenance, combine as a set of stones that took several years to source. Their magical explosions of verdant hues mimicking nature’s aurora overhead.
Dancing Aurora
The limited-edition Dancing Aurora watch features the trademark engineering of an ultra-thin calibre with a tourbillon movement and carriage, so characteristic of Piaget’s pioneering achievements since their craftsmen first developed this sleekest of styles in the 1960s. The challenge then became the creation of a dial worthy of such a pinnacle of luxury, and since its debut in 1964, the use of hardstone marquetry, a meticulous Métier d’Art, has been used to exceptional effect. Here white diamonds are set as if undulating and blowing in the wind, swirling and rippling across a face set with malachite marquetry on a tiny scale. Testing the talent of even the greatest master artisans, each plate of hardstone is specifically cut into a slice barely one millimetre thick, and perfectly set into its precise position. The whole is then polished to perfection, revealing the distinctive markings and colour of each piece, the nuances and interaction with light ensuring that no two dials are ever alike. Each new interpretation of this art brings with it a legacy dating back over decades, and in this case, the Dancing Aurora watch is only produced as a limited edition of 8.
Magical Aurora
The asymmetrical, articulated cuff watch stands as a quintessentially Piaget piece, a tribute to the heyday of Piaget design in the 1960s and ’70s, when the Maison led the vanguard of an unprecedented style revolution. This was an era when the brightest stars celebrated life in a stylish, fast-paced fashion. The Piaget Society embraced both the originality of the Maison’s designs and the creative freedom they represented. Combining seamless expertise and synergies between horology and jewellery manufacture, Piaget affected a true paradigm shift, changing the perception and possibilities of what a watch could be. Today it continues to create watches that constantly reposition themselves as the most elegant of accessories, worthy of inclusion in the highest of High Jewellery collections. The present example is fully articulated and so flexible and supple to wear that it feels like silk against the skin, a demonstration of the goldsmithing savoir-faire inherent within the Piaget Atelier.
The perfectly integrated dial of the Magical Aurora watch is covered by a unique collection of baguette-cut emeralds from Zambia. Hiding their magnificent time-keeping secret, three different shades of green, traditionally the colour of life and rebirth, combine in perfect colour harmony, shown off by the skilful setting of baguette and brilliant-cut diamonds to complete the dazzling effect.
The Gloaming Illuminations Set
The play of colour across the night sky continues to change. Candy colours of pink, purple and blue swirl and dance in striking displays that paint the heavens, setting pulses racing, exciting hearts and captivating the Piaget crowd. The sapphire family exhibits one of the widest range of colours in the gemstone world, occurring in almost every colour one’s imagination can allow. The cascade of 27 sapphires seen in the necklace is a unique collection of natural, graduating hues which took more than two years to assemble in order to match them in size, shade and quality. Included in the set are three ‘padparadscha’ stones with their highly sought after salmon pink or fiery sunset shades, a faultless melding of pink and orange rarely seen in nature. Putting pastel hues together in the unique necklace and earrings in a random mix of cuts and setting styles evokes a subtle, seductive shading effect, reminding us that all these gems share familial qualities and work together in perfect harmony. So clean are the gems that, unusually for sapphires, they are emerald-cut to reveal their inherent beauty. The design is repeated using 14 gems in the cascading waterfall effect of the long earrings, made with a suppleness that belies the extent of expert work needed to achieve this flexibility, while a 6.53 carat pink sapphire, chosen as the centre stone of the ring, shines out in a colour of perfect hue, tone and saturation.
Chapter 3 – INFINITE LIGHTS
As the glow of the spectacle fades, the crowd reunites to contemplate together, still dazzled by the experience and now peacefully rejoicing under starlit skies. Tiny pinpoints of light dance around them, their emotions still awakened by the splendour of the evening enjoyed. As the night draws to a close, they appear united and somehow touched forever by the inspiration and magnificence of the unforgettable Extraordinary Lights they have just witnessed.
The Extraordinary Lights Set
The Extraordinary Lights necklace stands out as a truly unique jewel among jewels. Taking Piaget’s craftsmen no less than 450 hours to transform the stunning set of stones into an even more impressive piece of jewellery, the necklace is fully articulated and is as comfortable to wear as it is charismatic to look at. A spectacular cushion-cut diamond of the most highly-prized Fancy Vivid yellow colour, re-cut by Piaget to become internally flawless and weighing 8.88 carats, combines with a pear-shaped Sri Lankan blue sapphire of 5.34 carats and a pear-shaped Tanzanian red spinel of 3.61 carats, all set with spessartite garnets and diamonds. Together this collection of gems offers an enchanting spectacle, fit for the crescendo of a gala like no other. Such beauty is matched by functionality in this necklace, which is as ground-breaking as it is breath-taking. The dramatic low-back design can be transformed and worn in as many as nine different ways, allowing maximum versatility. In a sensational design concept, the necklace has the ability to transform from ‘day to night’. The warm colours of daylight, the yellow, orange and red hues of the sun at the front of this jewel, are contrasted with the cooler blue colours of night at the back, meaning that the necklace is as beautiful to behold from the front as it is from behind. It can be worn with both aspects at once, or converted to make either variation impress as the frontispiece. The pear-shaped spinel on the “day” side and the dangling diamonds on the “night” side can also be removed and the diamond chain worn as a bracelet.
The colour combination is repeated and resonates in the earrings of the same set, while the matching ring adds a masterful aesthetic with its Fancy Vivid yellow cushion-cut central diamond of 5.54 carats. It glows from within, radiating outward in all directions, burning with an intensity that dazzles like the sun. Of the one in every 10,000 diamonds classified as fancy coloured, only 6% of all yellows are ever graded as Fancy Vivid, the highest grade for strength of colour. As a demonstration of the enormous rarity of such diamonds, after the centre stone for the ring was found, it then took a further two years to source and match the diamonds for the necklace and earrings.
Finally, as the light-filled spectacle slows and fades, the Piaget Society comes together once more, forever connected by the magnificence of the wonders they have witnessed together. The Celestial Dance watch pays tribute to these memories, mimicking the night sky in the most skilful of marquetry designs created by the artist Rose Saneuil, who lends her technical brilliance to the decoration of the dial. Rose approaches her marquetry work as an artist would their paintings or miniatures, creating tiny vistas as if one were looking at a landscape on a minute scale.
Presented as a limited edition of 8 watches, each taking more than 50 hours to realize, the unique mosaic-like marquetry effect is created for the dials using contrasts of materials unusual to jewellery: blue straw, leather, parchment, elytron and hornbeam. This multi-material micro marquetry, a signature and specialty of Rose Saneuil, requires immense patience and dexterity. Employing an ‘element by element’ technique, each piece of material is individually cut according to the initial design, and then delicately placed and secured into position using a microscope, such is the small scale required for such work. Finally, the dial is highlighted with diamonds set around the bezel and also gracing another Piaget signature, the off-centre hours-minutes counter and the flying tourbillon of the ultra-thin 670P Piaget movement.
