Unprecedented in both scope and scale, the second edition of Homo Faber brings together 15 exhibitions in the magnificent surroundings of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, showcasing the work of more than 350 designers and artisans from more than 30 countries. With each exhibition dedicated to a different aspect of craftsmanship, the event will feature exceptional master artisans from Europe, alongside 12 Japanese Living National Treasures – holders of the highest award in the Japanese arts. In 2022, Homo Faber highlights the importance of safeguarding craftsmanship by making these time-honoured skills economically viable and ensuring their transmission to new generations – thus promoting a more human, inclusive and sustainable future.

Chosen for its exceptional savoir-faire in watchmaking, Jaeger-LeCoultre is one of 14 luxury Maisons featured in the Genealogies of Ornament exhibition, a stunning homage to the intricate craft skills that lie behind the creation of luxury pieces. Masterminded by Judith Clark, a renowned exhibition-creator and fashion curator, the exhibition highlights the connections between craft, the wider arts and the design world, demonstrating the transformative power of craftsmanship and revealing the lineage – or genealogy – of each craft: specific traditions handed down from generation to generation.

As a vehicle for celebrating the talent and accumulated expertise of its artisans in both watchmaking and the decorative arts, Jaeger-LeCoultre pays homage to the Atmos clock. Alongside a display of magnificent heritage pieces and the newest contemporary examples, visitors may observe a master artisan from the Manufacture at work on various elements of an Atmos clock. Invented in 1928, the Atmos is a timepiece and an objet d’art in equal measure, continually reinterpreted by leading designers and artisans over the nine decades of its life. An icon in the true sense, the Atmos has become recognised around the world as a symbol of Swiss craftsmanship and ingenuity.

About the ATMOS

Born in 1928, the Atmos is a clock like no other. Invented by a Swiss engineer, Jean-Léon Reutter, it appears to defy the laws of physics, running for centuries without the need for any conventional energy source or rewinding. Instead, its mechanism is powered by normal, everyday fluctuations in air temperature; a variation of just one degree Celsius being sufficient to guarantee two days of running time. Since Jaeger-LeCoultre acquired the patents for Atmos, harnessing the Manufacture’s watchmaking skills to continually make technical improvements, and its creative talents to enhance the beauty of the clock, it has become a prized objet d’art. While the glass cube based on the Art Deco design of the Atmos I has become an instantly recognisable classic, Jaeger-LeCoultre has also collaborated with renowned designers and master artisans to create special editions of the Atmos.
