Hong Kong – This spring season, Christie’s Watches made history with three live auctions, “Important Watches — Featuring The Triazza Collection Part II” and “The Ultimate Collection” on 26 May, followed by “The Masterpiece Auction II From The Triazza Collection” on 28 May, driving the first half sale total for 2023 to HK$443,780,550 / US$56,925,684, the highest ever for the category at Christie’s Asia. An exceptional and historically important Patek Philippe Ref. 2523J ‘Dual Crown World Time’ broke the record for the reference when it reached HK$66,625,000 / US$8,546,282 in a standalone evening auction. Strong participation from 31 countries across 4 continents across the auctions confirms Hong Kong’s status as a powerful global collecting hub for watches. The category remains a gateway to Christie’s for younger collectors, with millennials comprising almost 40% of all the new buyers.
Alexandre Bigler, Senior Vice President and Head of Watches, Christie’s Asia Pacific, commented, “It has been a momentous and market-leading year so far for Christie’s Watches in Asia. After breaking the global record back in March for the most valuable timepiece ever sold online, horological history was made yet again with the spectacular standalone sale of a Patek Philippe Ref. 2523J from the magnificent Triazza Collection, reaffirming Christie’s strength across both live and online watch auctions and in selling the most prestigious single-owner collections. The demand in Asia for rare and exceptional timepieces continues and we very much look forward to presenting more exquisite timepieces to global connoisseurs and enthusiasts throughout the rest of the year.”

In recent years, Christie’s also achieved the world record price for an artwork at auction (Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi, 2017), for a 20th century artwork (Andy Warhol’s Shot Sage Blue Marilyn, 2022) and for a work by a living artist (Jeff Koons’ Rabbit, 2019). Christie’s Private Sales offers a seamless service for buying and selling art, jewellery and watches outside of the auction calendar, working exclusively with Christie’s specialists at a client’s individual pace.
Following the groundbreaking 2021 sale of the first digital art NFT ever offered by a global auction house (Beeple’s Everydays), Christie’s recently launched the first fully on-chain auction platform dedicated to exceptional NFT art. As an industry leader in digital innovation, Christie’s also continues to pioneer new technologies that are redefining the business of art, including the use of hologram technology to tour life-size 3D objects around the world, and the creation of viewing and bidding experiences that integrate augmented reality, global livestreaming, buy-now channels, and hybrid sales formats.
Christie’s is dedicated to advancing responsible culture throughout its business and communities worldwide, including achieving sustainability through net zero carbon emissions by 2030, and actively using its platform in the art world to amplify under-represented voices and support positive change.
