Genoa (Italy), 29 June 2023. Ulysse Nardin is proud to officially announce that its partner team, 11th Hour Racing Team, just won The Ocean Race 2022-23, the world’s longest and toughest team sporting event – the first time a US team has won in the 50-year history of the Race!

The team was leading the overall race with just one leg to go, when, on June 25 in The Hague, just 27 minutes after the start, the team was forced to retire from the final leg, following a no-fault collision with a competing team. The team put in a request for redress to the World Sailing International Jury and, following the hearing this morning, Thursday, June 29, the Jury has awarded 11th Hour Racing Team 4 points of redress, which gives them 37 points and a first place on the overall race leaderboard.

I’m absolutely ecstatic,” commented Skipper, Charlie Enright (USA). “This race takes everything out of you – emotionally, mentally, and physically. I’m incredibly proud of our whole team who have worked tirelessly for three years to get to this point. There have been highs, some incredible highs, but also lows that have knocked us all, but they were all worth it to hear this news today.”

Speaking from onboard Mālama as the team delivered the boat to Genoa, Skipper Charlie Enright (USA) commented, “To be the first US team to be lifting this trophy is an exceptional honor, and to be sharing the message and showcasing action and innovation for ocean health has made this a truly impactful, global campaign. It’s not the way I would have drawn this up, but the victory is sweet all the same,” Enright concluded.

Ulysse Nardin x 11th Hour Racing Team

For this 14th edition of The Ocean Race, Ulysse Nardin and 11th Hour Racing Team have joined forces to promote awareness of the importance of Ocean health for everyone. Based in Newport, Rhode Island, the name of the team is a strong symbol: it refers to the last hour of the clock (the 11th hour), which reminds us that the clock is ticking, and time is running out to restore the health of our planet. In fact, sustainability is embedded in the heart of all team operations and the objective is to ensure that collective actions today will help to develop healthy communities, prosperous economies, and a better protected planet for future generations. Time waits for no one, not the sailor competing in the race, nor the environment that needs to be restored, and it is the way we spend this time that defines who we are.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the legendary race, Ulysse Nardin just launched in May 2023 The Ocean Race Diver Chronograph. As well as being a master of the depths and the measurement of short time intervals, it highlights the issue of sustainability. This diver’s watch, water-resistant to 300 m, is made from an innovative recycled carbon alloy called Carbonium®, which has a 40% lower environmental impact than other carbon composites. Since 2019, the Manufacture has pioneered the use of this material, which is made from offcuts from high-tech aircraft. The heart of this exclusive watch, issued in a limited edition of just 100 pieces, operates to the beat of the UN-150 manufacture movement with silicon technology – perfect for taking the pulse of the Ocean.

As of 2022, Ulysse Nardin and sister Maison Girard-Perregaux have formed an independent collective of high horology Manufactures.

ABOUT THE OCEAN RACE
Since 1973, The Ocean Race has provided the ultimate test of a team and a human adventure like no other. For nearly 50 years, it has kept an almost mythical hold over some of the greatest sailors and been the proving ground for the legends of our sport.
The 14th edition of The Ocean Race will start from Alicante, Spain on 15 January 2023, and will finish in Genova, Italy early in the summer of 2023. The race will visit nine iconic cities around the globe over a six-month period and will feature a leg with the longest racing distance in the 50-year history of the event – a 12,750 nautical mile, one-month marathon from Cape Town, South Africa to Itajaí, Brazil. The two fleets of mixed crews on foiling IMOCA 60 and one-design VO65 will pass all three great southern Capes – Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn – non-stop, for the first time.

SUSTAINABILITY IN THE OCEAN RACE
We have a proven commitment to sustainability, and with the support and collaboration of 11th Hour Racing, Founding Partner of the Race Sustainability Programme and Premier Partner of The Ocean Race, we are inspiring action and creating tangible outcomes.
