Review Tank Louis Cartier Watch Ref. WGTA0121

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Cartier continues the magic story of the Tank Louis Cartier large model Collection with an Europe-only blue dial version in Platinum – Ref. WGTA0121. Just like the previous Ref. CRWGTA0093 (red dial in yellow gold), this watch is inspired by a 1995 limited edition watch, created as a tribute to the Decorative Arts Exhibition of 1925.

Simple, elegant, legendary

It is one of the only watch models in this world that requires no presentation. The Cartier’s Tank is one of the most recognisable designs in watch history: a rectangular case which uses the brancards on each side as lugs – inspired by the Renault FT (The Renault FT was a French light tank that was among the most revolutionary and influential tank designs in history). In a world dominated by round pocket watches, the appearance of a rectangular wristwatch is a strike of a genius or a madman – history demonstrated the first. The neutral shape permitted various sizes fitting small ladies’ wrists or larger iterations with complications. That is why it was loved by generations, and many influential personalities have owned it.

Cased in platinum, the Tank Louis Cartier Watch Ref. WGTA0121 measures 33.7 mm by 25.5 mm, a size considered small by today’s standards. The Cartier Tank’s case is presented in a highly polished finish that will reveal any fingerprint, scratch or sign of wear. But this makes part of the watch’s character, showing how much it was worn and loved. Judging by the exterior aspects of all the Tanks I encountered – this design was, and still is, really enjoyed for daily wear – as it should… The interior of the rounded lugs was decorated with a fine brushing.

The crown fitted with a cabochon is a charming detail of the Tank Louis Cartier. It contributes to the playfulness details of the watch and adds a touch of elegance. On the Ref. WGTA0121, the ruby cabochon reveals the precious characteristic of the model – the platinum case. The reduced crown’s dimensions may render it a bit difficult to use for the wind and set. Still, I cannot say it was too difficult or frustrating. It just needs some more care and delicacy.

Charming shades of blue held secret by the light

Monochrome at a glance, the surface transforms the perception of shades and depts according to the ambient light. What is dark at a certain angle can become shiny and bright when the viewing’s perspective is changed – pay attention to the dial’s shades in the video from the start of the article. Cartier uses an innovative electrochemical engraving to obtain micrometric markings that act as micro-mirrors. With staggering precision, these will form areas that react differently in the same light, creating this mesmerising and playful effect. A blue lacquer gives the final colour.

Cartier used a glossy, multi-layered decal for the indexes that accentuated the well-known and familiar Roman numerals. The same technique is used for the Cartier name under the XII numeral. The concept creates an impressive multi-depth effect that will catch the eye and increase the watch’s legibility. The rhodium finish steel sword-shaped hands, another familiar detail for this collection, create a strong contrast that helps legibility.

Manufacture mechanical movement Calibre 1917 MC

The watch is powered by the in-house Calibre 1917 MC – a usual presence now in the family (Cartier Tank Asymétrique, Cartier Privé Tonneau and Cloche de Cartier). With a nesting dimension of 7.1/4 by 5.3/4 lines and a thickness of only 2.9 mm, the movement released in 2019 offers a decent 38 hours of power reserve, regulated by a 21,600 vibrations/hour (3Hz) escapement.

The vertically brushed caseback is fixed with eight screws, vertically with four on each side. It is a good enough seal to be water-resistant up to 3 bar. On the upper side is visible the large engraving with the Cartier name; it mentions the mechanical movement and bears all the hallmarks necessary for a Platinum case. While the entire metal caseback does not reveal the beauty of the movement, we can expect the typical decoration of the Maison.

Subtle and recognisable for the connoisseur…

Tank Louis Cartier Ref. WGTA0121 is a superb classic piece for ladies and gents. Regardless of gender or wrist size, this watch will always make a good impression on the wrist. Easy recognisable as the legend it is, the timeless Tank will be a conversation starter and a reason for admiration. The presence of the red ruby cabochon will signalise the precious case material and the scarcity of the model – A limited edition of 170 timepieces.

As with any Tank, Ref. WGTA0121 is comfortable and pleasant on the wrist. The watch needs to be wound regularly – it is a hand-wound. But this is a pleasure and part of the daily routine for a watch lover, creating a stronger bond between the machine and its wearer. Cartier did a fantastic job again, offering a beautiful dial colour and a new way to enjoy its specific elegance and craftsmanship.
