DOXA unveils the special edition SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler, in celebration of legendary author, maritime explorer and NUMA founder Clive Cussler’s 93rd birthday. This release marks the second chapter in DOXA’s homage to the American novelist who greatly popularized SUB diving watches the world over. Available for purchase starting today through DOXA’s official website.
DOXA dives once again into the world of Clive Cussler, the famed American adventure novelist whose works, with over 100 million copies sold globally, have largely contributed to DOXA’s profile. Born in Illinois on July 15th, 1931, Clive Cussler would have celebrated his 93rd birthday today.
For the prolific writer who published over 85 books, the SUB’s iconic orange dial was perfectly in character on the wrist of Dirk Pitt, the hero of his novels. Clive Cussler was no stranger to adventure himself: he was a dedicated shipwreck hunter through NUMA (National Underwater and Marine Agency), the non-profit organization he founded in 1979.
While his novels weave together historical mysteries and epic adventures, the author and explorer – always a SUB on his wrist – continues to inspire DOXA, prompting this new tribute on his 93rd birthday.
The special edition SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler unveiled today honors this special day of commemoration. It is made of stainless steel with an aged patina, just like the first SUB 300T Clive Cussler presented last year in New York – the watch is perfect for an adventurer’s wrist, just like Dirk Pitt would have imagined.
The hallmark of this special series is its black Sharkhunter dial, displaying hours, minutes, seconds, and date, adorned with striking white hands and indexes. What truly sets it apart, however, is the elegant compass rose marking the four cardinal points – North, South, East, and West. This emblem of adventure and exploration serves as a poignant reminder of the mysteries hidden beneath the waves and the treasures waiting to be discovered.
For Clive Cussler, the compass rose was far more than a navigational tool; it embodied the very spirit of exploration and adventure, with each direction symbolizing a new possibility and a mystery waiting to be unraveled.
The North, often associated with guidance and constancy, represented the relentless pursuit of truth and discovery. The South, with its connotations of the unknown and exotic, evoked the many uncharted territories Cussler dreamed of exploring. The East, symbolizing beginnings and new dawns, served as a constant reminder of the innovation and curiosity that drove him to write and explore. Finally, the West, the land of setting suns and conclusions, represented the fulfillment of quests and the uncovering of hidden treasures.
Just like its predecessor, this special edition features the names of shipwrecks and other historical artifacts discovered or explored by NUMA engraved on the caseback, creating a tangible link to maritime history and adventure.
Capped by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, all diving-related displays feature a Super-LumiNova® luminescent coating to ensure excellent legibility during dives where visibility is reduced. The watch face is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, and all diving-related displays are coated with Super-LumiNova® for optimal readability during dives in low visibility conditions.
Equipped with a Swiss automatic movement with exclusive DOXA decorations operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations/hour (4.0 Hz), this watch offers a comfortable power reserve of approximately 38 hours. A date window at 3 o’clock and a screw-down crown round off the package, which is water-resistant to 300 meters (~984 feet), allowing safe exploration of the depths.
The watch comes with both the famous ‘beads of rice’ metal bracelet in aged steel just like the case, and a sportier, lighter black FKM rubber strap. Both feature a folding clasp with wetsuit extension.
Each piece is discreetly and individually engraved with its exclusive serial number as one of 93 watches (XX/93) on the inside of the lugs. Worn on land or at sea, this 42.50 mm-diameter watch, water-resistant to 30 ATM (equivalent to 300 meters or 984 feet), embodies the spirit of intrepid exploration and the timeless allure of adventure. A portion of the sales from this special edition will be donated to NUMA.
“The relationship between DOXA and my father Clive Cussler, as well as with our family today, has always been much more than just a business partnership. It’s a purposeful and enduring collaboration that began in my father’s novels, and continues today for the benefit of NUMA, which he founded 45 years ago.
I’m thrilled to celebrate my father’s memory with this SUB 300T Sharkhunter Special Edition DOXA watch released on his 93rd birthday. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to DOXA for honoring my father’s legacy with a timepiece that so uniquely illustrates his talent, originality and passion for exploration,”
noted Dirk Cussler, author and son of Clive Cussler.
“In celebrating Clive Cussler’s 93rd birthday, we pay tribute not only to his talent as a writer, but also to the close ties forged between the DOXA team and the Cussler family. Clive Cussler’s legacy continues to inspire us, and is just as much a part of the brand story we continue to write. I wish to thank Dirk Cussler and his family for the close relationship we continue to enjoy with DOXA,”
added Jan Edöcs, DOXA’s CEO.
