Franck Muller unveils the Grand Central Tourbillon Rainbow

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Grand Central Tourbillon collection by Franck Muller represents a groundbreaking departure from traditional horological design. At its core lies the audacious relocation of the tourbillon mechanism, moving it from its conventional position at 6 o’clock to the very center of the dial. This innovative reconfiguration demanded a complete reevaluation of the watch’s architecture, compelling designers and watchmakers to devise a novel arrangement for the hour and minute hands to orbit around the central tourbillon. The result is a timepiece that not only challenges convention but also showcases the intricate craftsmanship and technical ingenuity synonymous with haute horology.

A Stage for Innovation

The dial of the Grand Central Tourbillon is a testament to meticulous engineering and aesthetic precision. By positioning the tourbillon at its heart, the design achieves a harmonious interplay between mechanical complexity and visual balance. The hour and minute hands are ingeniously designed to encircle the central tourbillon, ensuring legibility without detracting from the focal point. The numerals, applied by hand and polished to perfection, are further enhanced by rhodium plating and a protective zapon varnish layer, underscoring the brand’s commitment to artisanal excellence.

At the heart of this collection lies the Franck Muller in-house caliber MVT FM CX 36T-CTR, an automatic movement that exemplifies technical mastery. Comprising 313 components, it offers a robust power reserve of four days and operates at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour. The movement is adorned with an array of refined finishes, including Côtes de Genève on bridges, perlage on the mainplate, and sunray brushing on key components such as the rotor and barrel cover. Chamfering, mirror polishing, and satin brushing further elevate its aesthetic appeal while ensuring optimal functionality.

Crafted from 18k white gold, the case is meticulously hand-polished and rhodium-plated to achieve a luminous finish. Its dimensions—36.5 mm in width, 52.65 mm in length, and 16 mm in thickness—strike a balance between presence and wearability. The sapphire crystal protects the intricate dial while offering water resistance up to 30 meters. The internal bezel, also fashioned from 18k white gold, further accentuates the watch’s luxurious character.
