Bell & Ross BR-03 Skeleton Steel

Introducing Bell & Ross BR-03 Skeleton Steel

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Twenty years since the birth of the BR-03, Bell & Ross has arrived at a compelling juncture. Following the acclaimed Skeleton trilogy presented at Watches & Wonders 2025, the Maison now adds the BR-03 Skeleton Steel to the family, a fourth variation that removes every visual barrier between wearer and movement.

A Dial That Barely Exists

The approach to the dial is the most striking element of this new reference. Rather than deploying a micro-blasted rhodium-plated plate as seen in the 2025 Grey Steel, Bell & Ross takes the concept further by adopting radical transparency. Four Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 sit in openworked “bathtub”-shaped applied indices, each filled with white Super-LumiNova X1 emitting green light. Beyond those, there is no dial to speak of. An untinted, anti-reflective sapphire crystal sits directly above the movement, preserving the natural grey steel tones of the calibre in full daylight without any colour filter. The skeletonised hour and minute hands carry the same Super-LumiNova fill, making legibility entirely reliable in darkness. Consequently, the visual result is total chromatic coherence: case, movement, and indices share a single, unified steel identity.

BR-CAL.328: X-Shaped Architecture

The movement powering the BR-03 Skeleton Steel is the BR-CAL.328, a dedicated calibre developed specifically for the Skeleton family and built by Sellita on the SW300-1 architecture. Running at 28,800 vph (4 Hz) with 25 jewels and a 54-hour power reserve, this automatic three-hand calibre delivers proven and reliable horology. The defining structural decision, however, is the X-shaped bridge configuration: four double arms radiate outward and connect directly to the four bezel corner screws of the case, simultaneously reinforcing the calibre’s rigidity and anchoring the visual composition. Côtes de Genève striping runs across the principal bridges, and bevelled edges on the skeletonised components add dimensionality to an already dramatic layout. For a Sellita-based calibre at this price tier, the execution is entirely appropriate and consistent throughout

41mm of Aeronautical Discipline

The 41mm square case in polished and satin-finished stainless steel remains, at this point, one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the contemporary sport-watch category. At just 9.65mm thick for a skeletonised construction, it delivers exceptional wearability across a broad range of wrist sizes. Bell & Ross applies a dual surface treatment throughout: polished surfaces on the lugs and bezel create sharp light contrasts against the satin-finished flanks, and crisp milled edges reinforce the precise, instrumental character of the design. Water resistance reaches 100 metres, appropriate for its professional brief. The box includes two straps: a black rubber strap and a black synthetic fabric strap inspired by aviation equipment, both fitted to a polished-satin steel pin buckle.

A Precisely Calibrated Proposition

The BR-03 Skeleton Steel is Bell & Ross at its most focused. By eliminating both the coloured dial plate and the tinted crystal of its 2025 predecessors, this watch achieves a visual unity that stands as its own identity rather than simply an evolution. The Sellita-based calibre brings solid Swiss mechanics, the X-bridge architecture gives it visual substance, and the fully transparent dial strategy ties every element into a single material language. It can be framed as an entry point for enthusiasts ready to step up from the standard three-hand BR-03 without diving straight into the demanding BR-X territory, and that positioning is honest. Priced at EUR 5,700 in line with the 2025 Skeleton Steel family, the BR-03 Skeleton Steel delivers a technically focused, visually coherent proposition that neither over-promises nor under-delivers.
