The synergy between Panerai and Kauli was crystal clear: a profound love for the sea. Born in Papeete, French Polynesia, 21-year-old Kauli’s life has revolved around the waves, especially the world-renowned surf of Teahupo’o, Tahiti. A modern hero on water, he demonstrates grit, passion and an unyielding commitment to pursuing sporting excellence.

Growing up amidst such unspoiled beauty, it is no wonder that Vaast found his calling in the sea’s embrace. His connection to the waters is a profound bond, a result of years immersed in the rhythms of the ocean. For Kauli, every wave is a challenge, but it is also a dance, a dialogue with nature, echoing the influences he has soaked up from his environment. With Tahitian origins, Kauli, who is a French citizen, draws a fascinating bridge between the passionate rawness of Polynesia and the structured sophistication of France. This union of heritage paints a vivid portrait of an athlete who embodies diverse cultures.

In a spectacular career that has seen him crowned 3x European WSL Junior Champion, Vice World Champion in team surfing ISA 2023 and winner of numerous international events, Kauli is a true force of nature. In 2021, he rode what is considered the biggest wave ever surfed in Tahiti, a colossal 10-meter-high marvel.

It is not just the waves of Tahiti that Kauli has since conquered; on August 5th, 2024, he won the gold medal in men’s surfing at the Olympic Games in Paris. While the connection with his home, Teahupo’o, stood out, the support from his family, friends, and the entire Tahitian community was evident. Embracing the power of ‘mana’, the spiritual force connecting all living things, Kauli merged with the ocean and the iconic waves of Teahupo’o. His journey, marked by significant milestones and a trajectory that promises even more, showcased the very essence of dedication and passion.

Kauli Vaast embodies our spirit,” says Jean-Marc Pontroué, CEO of Panerai. “His passion for the ocean, his ties with the waves of Tahiti and his pursuit of performance mirror Panerai’s own voyage. We are proud to have accompanied him on his road to the global sporting stage and are very much looking forward to keeping supporting him on his next challenges”.

Founded in Florence in 1860 as a workshop, shop and subsequently school of watchmaking, for many decades Panerai supplied the Italian Navy and its specialist diving corps in particular with precision instruments.
The designs developed by Panerai in that time, including the Luminor and Radiomir, were covered by the Military Secrets Act for many years and were launched on the international market only after the brand was acquired by the Richemont Group in 1997.
Today Panerai develops and crafts its movements and watches at its Neuchâtel manufacture. The latter are a seamless melding of Italian design flair and history with Swiss horological expertise. Panerai watches are sold across the world through an exclusive network of distributors and Panerai boutiques.
