Panerai’s journey with the America’s Cup, a symbol of nautical excellence and innovation, marks a significant chapter in its storied history. The relationship began in 2017, when Panerai stepped into the sailing sport elite and became the Official Partner of the prestigious sailing competition and the sponsor of the Oracle Team USA and Softbank Team Japan – Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa PAM01681.

Becoming the Official Sponsor of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli for the first time in 2019, it was during the 36th America’s Cup – presented by PRADA, held in the Hauraki Gulf of Auckland in 2021, that Panerai culminated its nautical ties with the sailing team. This partnership emerged naturally for a brand like Panerai that makes performance and technological innovation its distinctive flags. Over these six years of cherished partnership, Panerai has relentlessly developed collections of technical watches, one for each year of preparation in the run-up to the ultimate challenge, either drawing inspiration from the technologies and materials used in the America’s Cup or from the insights and needs of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team.

“Our association with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team resonates deeply with Panerai’s maritime heritage and our pursuit of boundary-pushing performance. This partnership is a natural extension of our brand’s core values,” says CEO of Panerai, Jean-Marc Pontroué. In the run-up to the 37th America’s Cup set in Barcelona, Panerai reaffirms its commitment as the Official Sponsor, joining forces with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team for the second consecutive edition.

“The synergy with Panerai takes us on a shared journey in pushing the limits of performance, where precision, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence are at the heart of our endeavours,” says Max Sirena, team Director and Skipper of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

This collaboration intersects with all the pillars of the Panerai identity, embodying Italian DNA, the Maison’s deep-rooted connection to the marine world, and its commitment to crafting instruments for modern heroes. Watches engineered and tested for the toughest conditions, epitomizing the brand’s dedication to durability, reliability, and functionality.

The new Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa PAM01681

Marking the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team’s performance and participation at the 37th America’s Cup, Panerai unveils the new Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa PAM01681. Exclusively limited to only 137 pieces, the new timepiece is designed to be a coveted collector’s item to celebrate the sophisticated aesthetic of the AC75 boat.

“PAM01681 is a tribute to the unwavering spirit and commitment of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team towards the 37th America’s Cup. We have carefully designed this watch to capture the essence of the team’s advanced AC75 boat, translating its design language into a wearable piece that resonates with sailing enthusiasts and watch collectors alike. Each of the 137 pieces in this exclusive series carries the spirit of the team’s determination, making it a truly special memento for those who appreciate the convergence of professional sailing, Italian design and Swiss technicity.” says Jean-Marc Pontroué, CEO of Panerai.

Incorporating the spirit of the Luna Rossa AC75 boat into a timepiece of striking beauty and functionality, the watch’s design elements are specifically derived from the boat’s characteristic features and translated into a wearable instrument of precision.

The watch’s aesthetic is based on the silver sun-brushed dial, which is reminiscent of the boat’s sleek, reflective hull. This eye-catching colour scheme is complemented by grey and red tones, which mirror the Luna Rossa team’s uniforms to create a cohesive visual narrative that connects the watch to the sailing team’s identity. The dial is adorned with the decal of Luna Rossa, while the bezel luminous dot, hands and indices are treated with Super-LumiNova®. One of the most striking technical features of the PAM01681 is the ‘azurage’ technique applied to the small seconds sub-dial. This intricate pattern is created using a specialized tool that carves concentric circles into the dial, resulting in an illusion of moving waves that adds depth and texture to the surface of the dial. From the SuperLumiNova® to the visual contrast of the ‘azurage’ as light plays off the engraved patterns, the mix of these elements contributes to improving the overall readability of the watch, a nod to the DNA of Panerai in elevated functionality.

Set in a 44mm brushed steel case, the watch boasts a unidirectional rotating steel bezel with a black polished ceramic disk, chosen for its notably higher resistance to scratches than a metal one, essential for withstanding unintended contact with various objects the bezel is usually exposed to and might cause it damage. The brushed and polished surfaces add depth and contrast to the overall design. The bezel rotates only counterclockwise, allowing for the calculation of immersion time – a crucial feature for an underwater instrument to comply with the rigors of sailing. With a rubberized black crown that prioritizes functionality and durability, the material provides a superior grip, even in wet conditions, making it easier for the wearer to adjust the watch’s settings while on the water. This feature is particularly beneficial for adventures on the sea, as it ensures the crown can be maneuvered during intense sailing and races. Completing the timepiece, the screwed case back – which helps to ensure the watch’s high degree of water resistance – showcases an engraving of the Luna Rossa AC75 boat, a tribute to the 37th America’s Cup and the partaking of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team.

At the heart of the Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa PAM01681 is the automatic P.900, a caliber renowned for its reliability with a 3-day power reserve. The P.900 is an automatic caliber that integrates expansive function within the confines of remarkably streamlined proportions. It measures 12½ lignes (28mm) in diameter and is only 4.2 mm thick, among the slimmest automatic calibers in the Panerai portfolio. The energy necessary to accumulate a power reserve of three days is delivered by a bidirectional oscillating weight and stored in a single barrel. Its balance wheel, oscillating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, is securely fixed in position by a balance cock. The caliber is equipped with a stop-second function that enables precise time setting.

Water resistant up to 30 BAR (~300 meters), the timepiece has been rigorously tested, subjecting it to a pressure up to 25% greater than the guaranteed water resistance value to ensure it fulfils Panerai’s stringent standards. The watch case, sapphire crystal and crown-protecting device with lever work together to create a watertight seal, preventing moisture and dust from entering the movement.

Innovation at Panerai extends to the user experience with an intuitive interchangeability system that allows the wearer to effortlessly switch between straps with a special device that accompanies the timepiece, ensuring versatility and style. The first bi-material strap is a nod to Luna Rossa with its grey tone and striking red accents, while the second black rubber strap offers a more subdued option.

Panerai
Founded in Florence in 1860 as a workshop, shop and subsequently school of watchmaking, for many decades Panerai supplied the Italian Navy and its specialist diving corps in particular with precision instruments.
The designs developed by Panerai in that time, including the Luminor and Radiomir, were covered by the Military Secrets Act for many years and were launched on the international market only after the brand was acquired by the Richemont Group in 1997.
Today Panerai develops and crafts its movements and watches at its Neuchâtel manufacture. The latter are a seamless melding of Italian design flair and history with Swiss horological expertise. Panerai watches are sold across the world through an exclusive network of distributors and Panerai boutiques.
