Grand Seiko SBGH368 – the first non-limited 18K Rose Gold 62GS joins the Heritage Collection

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Grand Seiko SBGH368 is a 38mm timepiece that reinterprets the iconic 62GS design, first introduced in 1967, within the Heritage Collection. This model marks the first non-limited edition of the 62GS crafted in 18K rose gold, offering a regular production option for enthusiasts. The watch draws inspiration from the theme of Sakura-Kakushi, a poetic natural phenomenon observed in the Tohoku region of Japan, where late spring snow delicately covers blooming cherry blossoms. The design retains the harmonious balance of flat surfaces and sharp edges characteristic of the 62GS, while incorporating new materials and finishing techniques to adapt to the challenges posed by rose gold.

The dial of the Grand Seiko SBGH368 features a copper-pink hue, slightly textured to evoke the imagery of Sakura-Kakushi. The rose gold-plated hands and hour markers complement the dial’s warm tones, creating a cohesive aesthetic. The dial’s design is understated yet intricate, with the texture adding depth and visual interest without overwhelming the overall composition. The brown crocodile leather strap further enhances the watch’s elegance, providing a balanced and refined appearance suitable for both formal and casual settings.

At the heart of the SBGH368 lies the Hi-Beat 36000 9S85 caliber, a movement that exemplifies Grand Seiko‘s expertise in high-frequency watchmaking, a tradition that began in 1968. The movement operates at 36,000 vibrations per hour, ensuring greater stability and precision. It incorporates Grand Seiko‘s proprietary Spron alloy for the mainspring, which contributes to a 55-hour power reserve when fully wound. Additionally, the use of MEMS technology in the escapement and a different Spron alloy for the hairspring enhances the movement’s accuracy, shock resistance, and magnetic resistance, making it a robust and reliable engine for the timepiece.

The case of the SBGH368 is crafted from 18K rose gold, a material that presents unique challenges in terms of finishing and durability. The case measures 38.0 mm in diameter and 12.9 mm in thickness, maintaining the proportions of the 62GS design while adapting to modern preferences for smaller case sizes. The Zaratsu polishing technique, a hallmark of Grand Seiko‘s craftsmanship, has been further refined to accommodate the rose gold, resulting in a flawless finish that highlights the interplay of light and shadow on the case’s surfaces. The watch features a box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating and a see-through case back, allowing a view of the movement while ensuring durability and clarity.
