When Hanhart replaces “ES” with “TI” on its legendary 417 Pilot chronograph, it signals a genuine shift in material philosophy, not a cosmetic update. Available in 39mm – Ref. H701L.250 and 42mm – Ref. H721L.250, each limited to 200 pieces, the 417 TI Desert Pilot marks the first time this storied Black Forest brand builds its iconic pilot’s chronograph in Grade 5 titanium.

The Desert Dial
Hanhart draws clear visual inspiration from the PRIMUS Desert Pilot for the colour direction. The sand-toned dial immediately sets this watch apart from standard 417 ES references, with black Arabic numerals and indices delivering clean, pilot-watch legibility. Super-LumiNova covers both numerals and hands, though Hanhart is honest enough to acknowledge that luminosity stays moderate: the black numerals and sand-coloured hands yield only weak output due to their respective colours.

The bicompax layout places small seconds at 9 o’clock and a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, with central chronograph seconds serving as the primary timing display. The historic Hanhart logo at 12 o’clock grounds the whole execution in the brand’s Bundeswehr heritage, and overall the dial achieves the instrument-grade clarity that defined the original 1954 German armed forces specification.

A Robust Movement
The Sellita AMT5100 M sits beneath the screwed sapphire case back, a hand-wound bicompax flyback chronograph that Manufacture AMT, Sellita’s dedicated high-end division, produces entirely in-house. A column wheel governs chronograph control, the movement beats at 28,800 vph (4 Hz), counts 23 jewels, and reaches 7mm in height.

The flyback function, what Hanhart historically called “Temposchaltung,” enables the wearer to reset and restart the chronograph with a single press of the lower pusher, recovering a feature that defined the original 417 from day one. Power reserve stands at a minimum of 58 hours, and critically, Hanhart regulates every single movement at its Gütenbach manufactory to a strict 0 to +8 seconds per day across six positions, with no negative deviation permitted.

Now in Titanium
Grade 5 titanium is the right choice here, and Hanhart reinforces the decision with a matte sandblasted finish that gives the chronograph an unambiguous tool-watch character. The 39mm case measures 46mm lug-to-lug; the 42mm reference reaches 49mm. Crucially, both versions share an identical height of 13.60mm (11.55mm without the crystal), keeping the profile relatively contained. The highly domed, internally anti-reflective sapphire crystal adds a period-correct visual quality to the profile.

Furthermore, the fluted titanium bezel rotates continuously in both directions and carries the signature red insert, a defining Hanhart detail that connects the watch directly to its military chronograph lineage. Water resistance reaches 10 bar / 10 ATM to DIN 8310, and Hanhart’s integrated shock protection system provides additional safeguarding for the movement. A Grade 5 titanium pin buckle on a textured rubber strap completes the construction, extending the lightweight material logic right down to the last component.
Verdict
Hanhart prices the 417 TI Desert Pilot at €2,990 including VAT (for both sizes: 39mm – Ref. H701L.250 and 42mm – Ref. H721L.250), placing a column-wheel flyback chronograph in Grade 5 titanium with rigorous, manufactory-level regulation into reach of collectors who value tool-watch authenticity over brand prestige. The PRIMUS Desert Pilot already earned its credentials at the Dakar Rally and the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge; consequently, the 417 TI carries that proven field pedigree into the classic pilot-chronograph silhouette. Limited to 200 pieces per size and available on sand-coloured or black rubber straps, this release earns its limited-edition status on technical specification alone.
