Bell & Ross BR-03 Green Steel: The Square That Commands Attention

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Bell & Ross BR-03 Green Steel belongs firmly in a special category that distils aviation-instrument logic into a wrist presence unlike almost anything else in its price class.

Bell & Ross BR-03 Green Steel

Bell & Ross built its entire identity on one radical premise: the most legible instrument panel shape is a circle inside a square. In 1992, founders Bruno Belamich and Carlos Rosillo looked at cockpit gauges and asked why watchmaking had strayed so far from pure function. The BR-03 answered that question in 2005 when the Maison introduced its first square wristwatch directly inspired by aeronautical instruments, establishing the iconic visual signature that now drives every collection. That round-in-a-square logic is not a styling exercise — it is a discipline that forces every design decision to serve legibility first and decoration second.

The BR-03 Green Steel’s dial is the star of the show. Bell & Ross applies a sunray finish that radiates from the centre, creating a gradient that shifts from a vibrant, almost vegetal green at the heart to a deep, near-black shade at the periphery. The effect is genuinely three-dimensional: in strong light the centre glows with an intensity that feels alive, and in shadow the darker outer tones take command, lending the watch a structural gravity that flat dials simply cannot match. A gloss varnish completes the surface, amplifying every reflection without over-dressing it.

Rhodium-plated applied indices and skeletonised hands fill with white Super-LumiNova®, emitting a green glow for night reading, which aligns perfectly with Bell & Ross‘s non-negotiable demand for instant legibility. A date window sits at 4:30, unobtrusive and well-integrated. Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock anchor the dial with cockpit-grade authority.

At the heart of the BR-03 Green Steel beats the BR-CAL.302-1, a self-winding mechanical calibre based on the robust Sellita SW300-1 architecture. Running at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), it offers 25 jewels and a 54-hour power reserve, enough autonomy for a long weekend without winding. Bell & Ross specifies hours, minutes, running seconds, and date as the displayed functions, keeping the complication count deliberately tight in the spirit of the cockpit instruments that inspired the collection.

The satin finish applied to the case flanks carries the same understated technical aesthetic that characterises the movement’s visible components: no unnecessary decoration, nothing to distract from the tool-watch purpose.

The BR-03 Green Steel wears a 41mm × 41mm square case in polished and satin-finished steel, 9.65mm thick — a notably lean profile for a piece with this much visual authority. The polished sides reflect light with elegance, and the satin-brushed top surfaces deliver the understated, technical look expected of a cockpit instrument. Four visible screws at the corners echo the fasteners of aeronautical instrument panels, a signature detail Bell & Ross has carried across every generation of the BR-03. The screw-down crown ensures water resistance to 100 metres, and an anti-reflective sapphire crystal guarantees optimal legibility in any lighting condition without compromising resistance to shocks and scratches.

Two strap options complete the offering: a black calfskin leather strap with a smooth, slightly glossy surface for a restrained, refined wrist presence, and an ultra-resistant black synthetic fabric strap for more active use. Both are secured with a polished and satin-finished steel pin buckle.

Green is no coincidence as a choice. As the colour of nature, life, and vitality, it carries a singular energy in the world of watchmaking, and Bell & Ross embraces it with the precision and boldness that define the Maison. The BR-03 Green Steel is not a watch designed to follow a trend. It does not need that since it asserts an identity – already known, established. It combines the functional rigour inherited from professional aviation with the aesthetic ambition of a Maison that understands form can express as much as function.
The BR-03 Green Steel retails at £3,500 / approximately €4,000 / US$4,750, positioning it as one of the most compelling propositions in the 41mm steel sports-watch segment today.
