Breitling Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 Boeing 747 Limited EditionAs the last of the mighty 747 airliners rolls off the Boeing production line, Breitling is launching a limited-edition Navitimer celebrating the legendary jet that revolutionized air travel.

It was known as the “Queen of the Skies.” From the moment it first taxied onto the runway in 1969, the Boeing 747 was destined to change the face of air travel. The original jumbo jet, it had two aisles and two decks, could carry double the passengers of the next-largest jetliner and fly more than 5000 nautical miles.

The incentive for creating the giant 747 came from reductions in air fares, a surge in air-passenger traffic and increasingly crowded skies. Following the loss of the competition for the gigantic military transport, the C-5A, Boeing set out to develop a large advanced commercial airplane to take advantage of the high bypass engine technology developed for the C-5A. The design philosophy behind the 747 was to develop a completely new plane, and other than the engines, the designers purposefully avoided using any hardware developed for the C-5.

The Boeing 747 went on to revolutionize commercial aviation, putting long-haul flights within reach of a new generation of air travellers and connecting the world like never before.

Flight attendants from multiple airplines pose in front of a 747 at the plane’s rollout.

What better way to remember a revolutionary jumbo jet than with a revolutionary pilot’s chronograph,” says Breitling CEO Georges Kern. “The Boeing 747 brought style to the skies, just as the Navitimer brought the spirit of aviation to style-savvy watch enthusiasts.”

The building of the first 747 was perhaps, one of the most ambitious privately-funded ventures in world history.

The Navitimer, developed by Breitling in 1952, was originally conceived for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). It would go on to become the de facto pilot’s watch throughout the golden age of civil aviation, with its defining circular slide rule that could perform all in-flight calculations.

Ode to an aircraft legend

The new Navitimer Boeing 747 features the AOPA logo at 12 o’clock, representing its heritage as a pilot’s chronograph. The colours on the dial echo the palette found on the original Boeing 747, captured in its cream dial with black subdials and red-and-white slide rule with blue accents. The “Boeing 747” name is subtly integrated into the slide rule’s inner scale. The watch also features an integrated date window at 6 o’clock. It is available on a black alligator leather strap or a seven-row metal bracelet.
