The German brand Nomos released during Baselworld 2018 the Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date Collection. The collection has a design inspired from automotive and a name inspired from the “No speed limit” German Highways.
Nomos Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date Collection Review
Nomos Glashütte was founded by Roland Schwertner in 1990. The brand is the largest manufacturer of mechanical timepieces in Germany. Year after year, Nomos has released beautiful minimalistic timepieces. Moreover, the watches are fitted with in-house manufactured movements. This year, the brand introduced a new automatic watch with a date display. This draws inspiration from the automotive industry and it is a collaboration between Nomos’s design department and Studio Aisslinger (the design studio of Werner Aisslinger and Tina Bunyaprasit).
As usual, Nomos does not disappoint. The Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date Collection respects the key features of the Glashütte watches. The Autobahn watch is beautiful in all three variants: Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date, Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date Midnight Blue and Autobahn Neomatic 41 Date Sports Gray. It is just a question of personal preference. The Autobahn is comfortable on the wrist and looks spectacular in low light.
Before getting more into the details, let’s have a look at the Baselworld clip with the watch on the wrist:
The Autobahn Collection comes in a stainless steel case with 41mm diameter and 10,5mm hight. The watch is light, only 66 grams. These dimensions make of the Autobahn a comfortable-to-wear watch. The textile blue-black woven strap and the 100m water resistance make it even suitable for swimming.
Nomos Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date
The first watch of the collection, Ref. 1301, has a curved, white silver galvanised dial with 2/3 light grey luminous ring with blue shaded SuperLuminova.
Nomos Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date Midnight Blue
The Midnight Blue, Ref. 1302 has a dark blue dial with a white luminous ring. The Ref. 1302 is my favourite. I guess that my weakness for the blue dials has a great influence on my judgement.
Nomos Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date Sports Gray
The Sports Gray Autobahn has the reference number 1303. This model can be seen as a chromatic combination of the first two.
Neomatik Calibre with Date – DUW 6101
The Nomos Autobahn Neomatik 41 Date Collection is powered by the manufacture calibre DUW 6101. The movement is the first calibre with a date from Nomos, also the first with three crown positions. It measures only 15 ½ lines (35.2 mm) in diameter and 3.6mm in height, including the date module. The thinness could be achieved due to a complete redesign with the date display on the edge of the dial. The date can be set in both directions.
The DUW 6101 is a typical Glashütte timepiece: three-quarter plate, Glashütte ribbing polish, and blue tempered screws. The movement is fitted with proprietary escapement with blue balance spring. It has a stop-seconds mechanism and a power reserve of 42 hours.
The calibre DUW 6101 is visually very appealing. The chamfered balance bridge is fixed with thermally blued screws. It has a Nomos swing system with tempered blue balance spring, that offers a lovely contrast with the rhodium-plated surfaces with Glashütte ribbing.
The three-quarter plate is further adorned with gold engraving. The rotor weight of the DUW 6101 is skeletonised, leaving almost unobstructed the view of the movement.
