Oris supports again the Movember Foundation with a new vintage-inspired piece: the Oris Movember Edition 2018. The new timepiece finds its origins in the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date. It has a nice colour scheme adorned by two cool straps personalised with the Movember Foundation logo. This is the hands-on review of the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Movember Edition 2018.
Oris is one of the brands that keep my interest always high. This year I was delighted by their novelties. I reviewed for Deployant the Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition and the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze Ref. No. 01 754 7749 3167 LS. It was a pleasure to have them in my hands for a good study.
I discovered the Oris Big Crown pointer Date Movember Edition 2018 during Munichtime 2018. The brand organised a barbershop corner during the show that functioned under the lights of Oris. Before going into the watch presentation, have a look at the wrist shot clip below. I apologise for the bad quality of the video. In my defence, the clip was filmed after a day of shootings in unhandy conditions.
The Movember Foundation, under the motto “Stop men dying too young!”, takes action against the main reasons of young men fatality: prostate cancer and testicular cancer, suicide and others.
Movember (a portmanteau of the Australian-English diminutive word for moustache, “mo”, and “November“) is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide. The Movember Foundation runs the Movember charity event, housed at Movember.com. The goal of Movember is to “change the face of men’s health.” – Wikipedia
Oris has set a target of raising 100,000 Swiss Franks from sales this year, for the Movember Foundation.
Oris Movember Edition 2018
Vintage is the name of the game
The Oris Big Crown is a prominent name in the history of aviation watchmaking. Oris manufactures pilot’s watches since 1910. A niche in watchmaking, the pilots’ watches were the new big thing. Finding perfection in terms of accuracy and visibility is a process that never ends. The Oris Big Crown is a constant piece in the Hölstein brand catalogue. Being introduced in 1938, this pilot’s watch still serves as an inspiration for the actual collection.
The Oris Movember Edition 2018 is a variation of the of the “Original” Big Crown Pointer Date, launched this year at Baselworld. A bit strange is that I didn’t notice it during the show. I think the crazy good looking 36mm bronze version caught my attention. The “Original” comes with a price point of only €1,200. Considering the heritage, the vintage look and the price, I consider it a killer deal.
The Movember Edition 2018 comes with a pleasant combination of polished and brushed finishes on the case. The 40mm case has a three-part construction. The case’s body is mirror polished. The frontal sides of the lugs have a smooth satin finish realised with a fine vertical brushing. The lugs are slightly taller as the rest of the case creating a placeholder for the vintage looking knuckled bezel.
Oris’ big crown looks rather proper on this piece. I know that, in theory, the crown is oversized for a facile setting and wounding, but for me is just natural – perfectly balanced with the rest of the watch.
When the dial is a classic
There is no better recipe for success as using proved, classic elements. Under a domed sapphire crystal can be observed a matt black dial. The layout is one of the most classical versions in the pilots’ watches.
The black and gold styling is pleasant. The cathedral hours and minutes hands are gold plated and filled with Super-LumiNova® C3. Unfortunately, there were no conditions for a lume shot.
The watch features big Arabic numerals for hours indexes and a gilt outer rail track for minutes indications with Super-LumiNova triangles at every 5 minutes (also double as hours markers).
The date indication is realised by a gold plated hand with a red tip that reaches a set of indices placed between the inner bezel and the minutes’ track.
Final touches
The Oris Movember Edition 2018 comes with a nice brown strap with the Movember moustache logo. The Movember set also contains a textile strap with the moustache logo engraved on the buckle.
The Movember Edition watch is personalised further on the back. The screwed-in back-case is polished and bears the watch’s normal engravings: number, materials and so on. The Oris logo is surrounded by “Oris Movember Edition” and the Movember moustache.
And the final words
Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Movember Edition 2018 is an engaging piece. Beyond the heritage and the vintage-inspired look, the Movember 2018 is a watch with a mission. This watch must remind everyone that the men’s health is, at a worldwide level, deteriorating. This remark might sound misogynistic, health is important for every human being. But there is, sadly, another aspect that the Movember Foundation intends to raise awareness for: the high rate of suicide between men. “Every year, 500,000 men take their own lives – that’s one a minute.” – Oris. That is alarming.
We all face our demons. The Oris Movember is a reminder to: check our health, regardless of men or women, regardless of physical or psychological.
The Movember watch is a sign that you care. The price difference between the Oris Big Crown Original (€1,200) and the Movember (€1,800) is worth every dime. You get a wonderful watch with a powerful statement and you help the world to be a better place for those in need.
