The Grand Classique was my first love from Longines – simple, elegant and yet so beautiful. It was for the first time presented in 1992 as a replacement for the prestigious Agassiz collection.
It is, in my opinion, the ultimate affordable dress watch. In the entire collection you can choose between the dial colours and materials, strap in leather with buckle or metal with folding clasp, VVS diamonds for indexes or bezel and so on. For the older collection (available in stores and outlets) there is the version with tonneau shaped case – lovely if you ask me.
The available dials are: white, grey, lacquered black, gilded, “flinqué” or white mother-of-pearl – featuring Roman numerals, painted indexes or VVS diamonds. The hands are blackened steel.
The case made out of steel, yellow or rose PVD or a combination of steel and PVD, comes in five different sizes (24, 29, 33, 35 and 37 mm diameter) with quartz movement: the L209 (base ETA E03.001) and L420 (base ETA 282.001), which assures the ultra-thin case of only 4.20 or 4.40 mm. There is an additional 34 mm diameter self-winding model (calibre L593 based on ETA 2000/1: 28800vph, 40 hours power reserve) with see-through back case and only 7.05 mm. Helpful for this thickness is the patented by Longines system of the lugs which are incorporated in the back-case. The back case has the inscription: La Grande Classique de Longines.
The watches can be found at the Official Retailers at prices starting with 920 Euro for the quartz, steel version, till 12000 Euro for the gold version (from an older collection, but still available in some shops).
