The classic watchmaking can be split between watches that shout for attention, and watches that command respect through restraint. The Daniel Roth Extra Plat Platinum sits firmly in the second category, and that is precisely what makes it so compelling.
A Dial Carved by Hand
The dial is crafted from a solid white gold base, and here, every decision reflects a commitment to hand craft over shortcut. Pinstripe guilloché covers the surface entirely, and each line comes from a rose engine, individually carved with precise control over depth and spacing to guarantee uniformity. A gold minute disc with a filet sauté border frames the periphery, complemented by black decalque typography for the time indication and the Daniel Roth name. The result reads quietly on the wrist, yet rewards close inspection in the way only hand-executed work can.
Calibre DR002: Architecture in Motion
Beneath that dial lives the manufacture Calibre DR002, developed and assembled at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton under the direct supervision of master watchmakers Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini. At just 3.1 mm thick, the movement spans 31 x 28 mm, houses 143 components across 21 jewels, and runs at 4 Hz for a 65-hour power reserve. Achieving that frequency in so slim a package required a variable-inertia balance wheel with counterweights, ensuring energy efficiency without destabilising the calibre’s overall architecture.
The finishing tells a story of its own. Over 70 individual hand operations shape the surfaces, and the most demanding of those are the internal angles, executed in a rounded bercé form that takes at least twice the time of a conventional bevel. Craftsmen shape and refine the angled surfaces using a cabron tool in-house, a technique producing a rounded, brilliant profile that automated processes cannot replicate.
The Platinum Case
The double-ellipse case in platinum measures 38.6 x 35.5 mm with a total thickness of 7.7 mm, and those numbers alone tell you how well the movement integrates into the architecture. Platinum is considerably denser than gold, which increases the strain on tooling and demands precise, low-speed artistry that can take up to three times as long to achieve compared to gold. Downward-shaped lugs enhance wrist comfort and serve as a natural bridge between the case and the light-tan calfskin leather strap, adding warmth to what could otherwise read as a cold, grey metal. A flat anti-reflection sapphire crystal sits up front, and a sapphire caseback closes the watch, exposing the finishing work for those who know what they are looking at.
Understated, Precise, Rare
Daniel Roth revived the brand in 2023 with the support of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, and the Extra Plat Platinum represents the clearest articulation yet of that brand’s guiding principle: La Montre Objet d’Art. Available from May 2026 and priced at 65,000 CHF (excl. taxes), this is a watch for the collector who values technical integrity over visible complication. In a landscape crowded with loud statements, Daniel Roth chooses discipline, and in doing so, it produces something genuinely rare.
