H. Moser & Cie. Pioneer Centre Seconds Sun Berry: When Berry Purple and Electric Yellow Collide in Haute Horlogerie

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Summer 2026 did not wait for an invitation, and neither did H. Moser & Cie. The Pioneer Centre Seconds Sun Berry Ref. 3201-1203, lands in the full heat of summer with a Berry Purple fumé dial, electric yellow accents, and the conviction that haute horlogerie does not need to be solemn to be serious. This is a 40 mm steel sports watch powered by the beautiful in-house HMC 201 automatic calibre, and dressed in a Concept configuration that strips away the logo and every index. What remains is pure colour, pure craft, and an attitude that the brand from Neuhausen am Rheinfall has been refining for years.

The Fun in Fine Watchmaking

Moser has always operated with a particular kind of confidence: the confidence to be playful without apologising for it. Since the brand revived its fumé dials around 2015 and decided to erase its own logo from the Concept references, it has built an identity around the idea that a watch can be bold, colourful, and technically immaculate all at once. The Pioneer line has long carried this spirit, from the Swiss Mad Red to the Funky Blue to the Citrus Green, each one a deliberate statement that discretion is not the only road to elegance. With the Sun Berry, Moser pushes further into the chromatic spectrum, pairing a berry-toned sunburst fumé with electric yellow in a combination that feels genuinely electric. The brand’s ambition was always to bridge traditional horology with an identity where you have fun talking about watches. That is not a concession to trend-following, but it is a design philosophy that requires real courage in a sector still dominated by anthracite and beige. The Pioneer Centre Seconds Sun Berry is where that courage lands squarely on the wrist.

Vibrancy and legibility

The dial of the Sun Berry is the reason this watch exists. The Berry Purple fumé features a sunburst pattern radiating from the centre, creating a depth of tone that shifts from a brighter, more vivid purple at the heart of the dial to an almost wine-dark depth toward the edges. This is the signature Moser gradient technique, built on a fumé process that the brand has refined over decades and that gives each dial its own subtle variation in colour intensity. The watch ships as a Concept reference, meaning no logo, no applied indices, and no visual noise whatsoever. The entire surface belongs to colour and light. Leaf-shaped hour and minute hands carry yellow Super-LumiNova fills, and the inner flange repeats the same electric yellow with its own Super-LumiNova charge, so the yellow-on-purple tension holds equally in daylight and in the dark. The result is a dial composition that reads instantly at a glance and rewards a longer look.

The Movement: HMC 201

Flip the watch over and the sapphire crystal case-back reveals the HMC 201, H. Moser & Cie.‘s in-house automatic calibre and the beating heart of the Pioneer line. The movement measures 32.0 mm in diameter and 5.5 mm in height, ticks at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), and counts 27 jewels across its architecture. The bi-directional pawl winding system charges the mainspring regardless of rotor direction, contributing to the minimum three-day power reserve that makes this a genuinely practical daily wearer. The HMC 201 carries an original Straumann® hairspring, a proprietary component produced through H. Moser & Cie.‘s sister company Precision Engineering AG, offering superior isochronism and magnetic resistance compared to a standard alloy spring. Finishing on the movement follows Moser‘s anthracite aesthetic: the bridges carry the brand’s signature double-stripe decoration, partially skeletonised sections open the view onto the gear train, and the engraved oscillating weight adds one further layer of craft detail. Hacking seconds, engaged by pulling the crown, allow precise synchronisation. The calibre balances contemporary industrial finishing with traditional decorative ambition.

The Pioneer case

The case of the Pioneer Centre Seconds Sun Berry is solid steel, 40 mm in diameter and 12.0 mm in total height with the domed sapphire crystal. The mid-case features the Pioneer’s distinctive ridged cutouts, which reduce visual weight and give the watch its sporty character without resorting to over-engineering. A screw-in crown, adorned with the Moser ‘M’ monogram, ensures the 12 ATM water resistance that puts this watch comfortably beyond recreational diving depth. A domed sapphire crystal sits on the dial side, adding a pleasant optical curvature that interacts nicely with the sunburst pattern below it. The watch is fitted with a vivid yellow rubber strap secured by a steel pin buckle engraved with the H. Moser & Cie. logo, the one place the brand allows its name to appear on this reference.

Verdict

The Pioneer Centre Seconds Sun Berry is a coherent watch: the colour story, the Concept philosophy, the movement quality, and the case construction all point in the same direction. H. Moser & Cie., founded in 1828 and currently producing around 4,000 watches per year, builds every component of this calibre in-house, including the hairspring, which remains a rarity even among the Swiss independents. Based on the pricing of the closely related Sunny-Side Up reference, which carried a CHF 14,500 retail price, expect the Sun Berry to sit in a similar bracket, and indeed the official price for reference 3201-1203 had been formally confirmed at the time of writing. Summer arrives once a year. This Pioneer arrives exactly on time.
