Reading Time: 3 minutes

Chopard is announcing its participation in the film Rebecca, directed by Ben Wheatley and available since October 21st 2020 on Netflix. In this adaptation of the eponymous novel written in 1938 by Daphne de Maurier, Chopard watch and jewellery creations adorn the characters played by Lily James, Keeley Hawes and Armie Hammer. An artistic collaboration giving the Maison an opportunity to reaffirm its love of cinema and all the emotions it arouses.

Lily James and Keeley Hawes shine in Chopard Haute Joaillerie

After a whirlwind romance in Monte Carlo with handsome widower Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), a newly married young woman (Lily James) arrives at Manderley, her new husband’s imposing family estate on a windswept English coast. Naive and inexperienced, she begins to settle into the trappings of her new life, but finds herself battling the shadow of Maxim’s first wife, the elegant and urbane Rebecca, whose haunting legacy is kept alive by Manderley’s sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas). Directed by Ben Wheatley (High RiseFree Fire) and produced by Working Title Films (Emma, Darkest Hour), Rebecca is a mesmerising and gorgeously rendered psychological thriller based on Daphne du Maurier’s beloved 1938 gothic novel. The film has been available to stream exclusively on Netflix since October 21st 2020.

In one of the most dramatic scenes of the plot, actresses Lily James and Keeley Hawes honour the jewellery creations loaned by Chopard. The former appears with a rose gold necklace and matching earrings from the Temptations Collection, set with rubellites and pink sapphires; while the latter wears a rich tanzanite, aquamarine and garnet necklace from the Red Carpet Collection along with a pair of amethyst and pink sapphire earrings from the Temptations Collection. In addition, during the same scene, actor Armie Hammer wears the L.U.C Heritage Grand Cru timepiece. Carefully crafted by the best artisans in the Maison’s Haute Joaillerie and Haute Horlogerie workshops, these creations, together with the film’s rich costumes, form a meticulous composition reviving the atmosphere of the Roaring Twenties that Ben Wheatley has sought to recreate to make Rebecca a work that is both captivating and highly aesthetic.

Chopard in love with cinema

For several decades now, Chopard has continued to bear witness to its unconditional love of cinema, a commitment guided by the passion of its Co-President Caroline Scheufele, who in 1998 began a partnership with the Cannes Film Festival that has endured ever since. With Rebecca, the Maison known as the “Jeweller to the Stars” re-explores the easy-living vibe of the French Riviera, home to the annual awards ceremony in which all prizes presented are exclusively crafted by Chopard. Each year, the Cannes fortnight also offers an opportunity to spotlight a new generation of thespians thanks to the Trophée Chopard, awarded to an up-and-coming actress and actor.

Nurtured by the emotions aroused by the Seventh Art, Caroline Scheufele consistently ensures the Maison’s ongoing contribution to film production. Protagonists in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Diana (2013), Dexter Fletcher’s Rocketman (2019), Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) and Cary Joji Fukunaga’s forthcoming No Time To Die (scheduled for release in 2021) all sparkle with creations by the Swiss watchmaker-jeweller. Chopard and Netflix combined their passion for action back in 2019 already in Michel Bay’s production of 6 Underground.
