MING 37.05 II

MING 37.05 Series 2: Ad Astra

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Following on the first moonphase in 2021, the independent brings a second generation with a new and dynamic interpretation of the night sky in the MING 37.05 Series 2.

Moving changes

Our new moonphase trades the former gradient blue-black textured dial for an anthracite one with sunray brushing and star-shaped holes: the holes are important as they are really luminous stars that appear and disappear with the changing phases of the moon. This is achieved by having the large rotating moon disk do double duty for both moon and dynamic stellar backdrop.

Inversion and whimsy

We retained the sapphire upper dial for the hour indices, moon mask, inversion, and now it also holds luminous HyCeram stars on its upper and lower surfaces to add further visual depth to the piece. Playing on the idea of lunar romance the accents of the moon, date font and stars are unified in a warm hue.

An interactive choice

A moonphase is an old complication, and paying tribute to that and the popularity of our new movement finishing, we have left the MING 37.05 Series 2 as a hand wind piece. Once again, offering owners more opportunities to interact with their watch. The watch is powered by the Sellita SW288-1 which is heavily reworked and finished in a style now familiar to our supporters since its debut in the 27.01 Ultra Thin. Bridges are skeletonized, matte-blasted and anthracite coated, with a contrasting portion on the main train bridge in circular-brushed rhodium and the movement offers 40 hours of power reserve.

Refinement of the next generation

The MING 37.05 Series 2 is now the fifth watch of the 37-series. The case design is complex to machine because of its multiple compound curves – such as the line from case side to lug tip, and is showcased with presence and sparkle using an alternating polished-brushed finish.  It also wears larger on the wrist thanks to a significantly wider dial opening than previous cases. Wearability and comfort for a wide variety of wrist sizes is maintained with the same 38mm maximum diameter and 20mm lug width, however. In short: it looks bigger than a 17-series, but is just as comfortably wearable.

We continue our partnerships with Manufacture Schwarz-Etienne for construction, production and assembly; Jean Rousseau Paris for the accompanying goat leather strap, and Studio Koji Sato for the pouches.

About MING:
Horologer MING was founded and funded by six enthusiasts from around the world under the leadership of Ming Thein, a photographer, designer, business strategist and above all, a lover of watches. Together, the MING team draws from extensive collecting experience ranging from vintage to avant-garde; from quality affordables to six-figure commissioned independent pieces.
Our goal with MING has always been to make the watches we ourselves want, and to bring back that sense of excitement and discovery through deliberation and refinement in every detail while also delivering value beyond the price point. We neither pretend to have history nor are we burdened by it. We will be the first to admit that we don’t build in-house but rather on the strengths of dedicated partners like Manufacture Schwarz-Etienne, Agenhor and Jean Rousseau. All our watches are assembled, regulated and tested in Switzerland, with final quality control completed personally in Malaysia.
MING is our way of sharing our experience with enthusiasts – budding aficionados and seasoned collectors alike – who want to discover watchmaking substance beyond brand. We are proud to have our efforts recognized at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, with multiple finalists and the 17.06 Copper winning the 2019 Horological Revelation prize.
In 2021 we also launched the Special Projects Cave, an invitation-only program to create small runs of experimental pieces that are concept-driven and unencumbered by regular production constraints or economics. 2022 marked the fifth anniversary of the brand, with over 50 references released to date.
