Lundis Bleus Lagoon Blue - Roman Numerals

Presenting Lundis Bleus Ref.1120-EU “Lagoon Blue – Roman Numerals”

Reading Time: 3 minutes

I follow Lundis Bleus since the end of 2016. I discovered by chance the simple but really nice dials and the strong brand language. The people behind the Lundis Bleus name are Johan Storni and Bastien Vuilliomenet, two exceptional persons with a unique view of horology and faithful to their brand’s character. Today, I want to present you one of their latest pieces, the Ref.1120-EU “Lagoon Blue – Roman Numerals”.

A recognisable outer package

Part of the Contemporaines collection, the Ref.1120-EU “Lagoon Blue – Roman Numerals” comes with a recognisable steel case. The 40mm diameter makes it ideal for a gender-neutral piece. Some might argue that even 40mm is too big for this three-hands piece, but I argue this with the simple fact that the dial deserves the larger space and that the entire appearance is well balanced.

The case has an interesting construction with lugs fitted on the back side. This particular design element permits relative small lugs bodies, resulting in a comfortable wear. The watch wears on a small side and looks elegant on the wrist.

The middle piece received a mirror polish, while the lugs combine a fine brushing for the front with polishing on the sides. The Lundis Bleus signature crown’s design follows somewhat the curved case body shape. The grip is very good.

Lundis Bleus Ref.1120-EU “Lagoon Blue – Roman Numerals” is covered by a raised crystal fitted in the rounded bezel. This smart choice amplifies the depth effect of the dial. Especially for this dial finish, it is a very successful combination. The anti-reflective coating can be found on both sides, resulting in a delightful view, uninterrupted by unwanted reflexions.

A handcrafted gorgeous dial

The strongest point of Lundis Bleus Ref.1120-EU “Lagoon Blue – Roman Numerals” is, as expected, the dial. Crafted by hand, the dial deserves its name of “Blue Lagoon”. For the base was chosen sterling silver. The dial was hand engraved with a superb looking pattern, named “Ocean 21”. This texture reminds me of the rain falling on a serene water surface.

The base was covered with Lagoon blue enamel and fired in the grand feu style. The technique implies several layers of enamel, each fired at a high temperature to seal and bake the enamel and prevent cracking.

The last step in dial manufacturing was the printing of the numerals, indexes and brand’s name and logo. The white ink seems to float above the engraved surface – the end result is spectacular. The Lundis Bleus signature skeletonised hands were sandblasted and rhodium-plated to offer good legibility. The matt finish of the hands does not steal the beauty of their background but gives the entire scene an interesting note.
