Some watches impress with craft, others with spectacle, and a rare few reset the coordinates of modern horology. The Ulysse Nardin [SUPER]FREAK belongs to that last group, because it takes the core Freak idea and pushes it into a new, highly concentrated expression built around a flying carousel, twin flying tourbillons, a seconds display, and the brand’s most advanced automatic architecture yet. I find the Super Freak fascinating because it does not chase nostalgia. It takes the language of the original 2001 Freak, strips it back to function, then rebuilds it with 25 years of research, 35 patented Freak innovations across the lineage, and a new in-house calibre, the UN-252, with 511 components assembled by a single watchmaker.

[HISTORY]FREAK

To understand the [SUPER]FREAK, you need to return to the original provocation. In 2001, Ulysse Nardin launched the Freak as a watch with no crown, no conventional hands, and no dial in the usual sense, using the movement itself to indicate time and introducing silicon to a mechanical wristwatch in a way that changed the industry.

That idea grew from the meeting of Rolf Schnyder and Dr Ludwig Oechslin, then gained real form after Carole Forestier-Kasapi created a crownless rotating movement concept in 1997 for a Breguet anniversary competition. Oechslin reworked the architecture by moving the barrel to the centre, freeing space for a very long mainspring, and turning the rotating movement into the minute display and the rotating barrel into the hour display.

An essential truth about the Freak story: Ulysse Nardin did not create a variation on classical watchmaking, it broke its structure. The original Freak introduced the orbital one-hour carousel, bezel time-setting, rear winding, an eight-day power reserve in its early conception, and a silicon escapement that opened the door to low-friction, non-magnetic, lubrication-light solutions.

From there, the Freak line became a moving laboratory. The brand added diamond components in the Freak Diamond Heart, DIAMonSIL in 2007, a silicon hairspring in 2008, tourbillon architecture in the Freak Diavolo, automatic winding with the Grinder system in the InnoVision 2 and Freak Vision, dual oscillators in the Freak S, and a return to the pure original spirit in the Freak ONE of 2023.

The [SUPER]FREAK now sits at the summit of that family. Ulysse Nardin describes it as the most complicated time-only watch it has ever built, and that claim makes sense because this watch combines the carousel logic of the historic Freak, the automatic efficiency of the Grinder, the dual regulating concept introduced by the Freak S, and an entirely new seconds mechanism enabled by a patented gimbal system.

[UNIQUE]DIAL

Calling this watch a dial watch feels wrong, yet the display side has become one of the smartest parts of the [SUPER]FREAK. Ulysse Nardin uses a transparent blue hour disc in Nanosital, accented by a white Super-LumiNova hour marker, and that decision matters because it opens the view to the automatic mechanism below instead of closing the architecture with a solid disc.

Nanosital itself gives the watch a distinct technical identity. The material is an optically transparent polycrystalline substance created through controlled crystallisation of glass from a high-temperature fusion based on silicon dioxide and aluminium oxide, with a formulation tuned for transparency, density, hardness, and stable colour.

This choice works because the disc does not behave like a decorative afterthought. Its pale blue tone, with a slight violet undertone, supports the marine character of Ulysse Nardin, yet it also reinforces the high-tech personality of the watch and lets the layered construction breathe.

Legibility remains faithful to the Freak concept. The hour indication rotates over twelve hours, the minute bridge itself points to the minutes, and for the first time in a Freak, the watch also displays seconds, which gives the [SUPER]FREAK a new kinetic rhythm on the wrist and on the desk under a loupe.

[REVOLUTIONARY]MOVEMENT

The movement is the reason this watch exists. The new automatic calibre UN-252 contains 511 components and runs as a flying carousel, with the minute bridge rotating around its own axis once per hour and carrying a pair of flying tourbillons made of titanium.

Those two tourbillons sit at a 10-degree incline, rotate in opposite directions, and each completes one revolution in 60 seconds. Ulysse Nardin calls this the first automatic double tourbillon ever made, and within the specific architecture of the Freak, that achievement feels especially significant because the regulating system lives inside a moving, time-indicating structure rather than in a conventional fixed movement layout.

A great deal of the watch’s intelligence sits in how it manages energy and averages rate. The [SUPER]FREAK uses the world’s smallest differential at 5 mm, built from 69 components including eight ceramic ball bearings, to average the speed of the two inclined tourbillons and transmit energy toward the seconds display.

The seconds indication itself required an entirely new solution. Because the differential and the seconds display sit on a decentered axis, Ulysse Nardin developed a patented gimbal system with 11 components, measuring just 4.8 mm, to guarantee precise energy transfer to the cylindrical seconds display.

The regulating organs continue the Freak tradition of material science. The movement integrates ten silicon components, including two balance wheels, two hairsprings, and two DIAMonSIL escapements, with DIAMonSIL combining silicon with diamond coating to increase hardness, reduce friction, and improve long-term durability under constant impulse loads.

Frequency also shapes the personality of the watch. The two regulating systems run at 2 x 2.5 Hz, or 18,000 vibrations per hour each, and the movement uses 42 jewels, which shows that Ulysse Nardin chose a balanced route that prioritises efficiency, stability, and dramatic mechanical visibility over simple headline speed.

Finishing deserves attention because this is not just an engineering object. Ulysse Nardin states that over 70 per cent of the movement receives hand finishing, using traditional tools such as leather polishers, needle files, and wooden sticks, with hand satin-brushing and manual sandblasting creating the contrasts and textures across the architecture.

Titanium makes that work harder, not easier. Unlike brass, titanium resists tools, demands extra hand labour, and suits a skeletonised movement because it combines low weight with high strength, which helps explain why the 327-component minute bridge still weighs only 3.5 grams and comes in 30 per cent lighter than the equivalent bridge in the Freak S.

The automatic winding system remains central to the whole concept. The patented Grinder captures even slight wrist motion through a rotor linked to a frame and four ultra-thin blades, each 0.12 mm thick, doubling the energy harvested per angle unit compared with traditional systems and giving the watch the efficiency needed to feed a twin-tourbillon carousel.

[PRECIOUS]CASE

The case continues the Freak’s unusual logic, because it is not just a container. The [SUPER]FREAK uses a new 44 mm white-gold case, smaller than the 45 mm case of the Freak S, paired with a white-gold bezel and a redesigned white-gold locking element that looks cleaner and slimmer than before.

Dimensions reveal a thoughtful balance between spectacle and wearability. Ulysse Nardin lists an apparent height of 12.2 mm and a total height of 16.54 mm, which reflects the visual trick of the Freak architecture: the watch wears as a compact mechanical theatre even though its layered movement rises well above the usual plane of a traditional calibre.

Function still shapes every interaction. As with earlier Freaks, the wearer sets the time via the bezel and winds the watch through the caseback, preserving the crownless identity that made the original such a shock in 2001 and keeping the tactile experience unique within contemporary haute horlogerie.

The caseback includes a sapphire window, and the watch remains water resistant to 30 metres. That figure does not define the watch, but it does confirm that Ulysse Nardin has kept everyday practicality in sight despite the fact that only 13 of the 511 components remain fixed and 97.46 per cent of the movement stands in motion.

The watch comes on a grey ballistic rubber strap with white stitching and a white-gold folding clasp. That pairing works well because it stops the watch from drifting into formal stiffness and keeps the [SUPER]FREAK aligned with the pragmatic, marine-rooted, future-facing attitude that has defined the Freak line from the start.

The [SUPER]FREAK feels like the point where the entire Freak saga folds back on itself and then leaps forward again. It honours the original 2001 act of rebellion, yet it does not live on memory alone, because it brings fresh technical substance through the UN-252, the automatic double tourbillon, the smallest differential and gimbal systems of their kind, the first seconds display in a Freak, and a display architecture that remains instantly recognisable as Ulysse Nardin.

I see it as a watch for collectors who understand that innovation in watchmaking does not only mean adding functions. Sometimes it means rethinking how a time-only watch moves, breathes, transmits energy, and occupies space, and that is exactly what the [SUPER]FREAK does with unusual confidence and impressive clarity.

Ulysse Nardin will make just 50 examples of the [SUPER]FREAK, reference 2520-500LE-3A-BLUE/3A, and price it at CHF 320,000. For a watch that distils 180 years of brand history and 25 years of Freak research into one dense, mechanical statement, that price places it exactly where it belongs: at the sharp end of experimental haute horlogerie.
