Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin: Calibre 2550 Redefines the Limits

First day of Watches & Wonders Geneva 2026 witness a headline act from Vacheron Constantin: seven years of engineering work compressed into 2.4 millimetres. The Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin, housing the brand-new Calibre 2550, marks a decisive step in the Maison’s long tradition of ultra-thin excellence, one that stretches back to the 1.64 mm Calibre 1003 of 1955 and the 2.45 mm self-winding Calibre 1120 of 1968. Vacheron Constantin had not delivered a new ultra-thin self-winding architecture since the 1120, and Calibre 2550 is its long-awaited successor.

The Dial

The salmon-lacquered dial takes a refined, almost minimalist approach. Vacheron Constantin applies a sunburst satin finish across the dial’s centre, giving the salmon colour luminous depth, then transitions to a velvet finish on the peripheral minute track, a subtle contrast in texture that rewards close examination. Applied 18-carat white gold hour markers anchor the layout, with blue Super-LumiNova® filling their indices and the hands for consistent legibility across light conditions. The pairing of platinum with salmon lacquer draws directly from the Maison’s 1940s archive, confirming this dial as a considered archival reference, not a stylistic accident.

The Movement

Calibre 2550 measures 30.6 mm in diameter and 2.4 mm in thickness, housing 153 components across 25 jewels and operating at 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour). Its three-part architectural innovation, combining a bidirectional micro-rotor, a suspended double barrel, and a compact single-level gear train, resolves the fundamental conflict between ultra-thin packaging and functional autonomy.

The 15.5 mm platinum micro-rotor integrates directly into the mainplate rather than sitting above it, recovering precious vertical space; platinum’s exceptional density maximises winding efficiency despite the rotor’s compact mass. The suspended double barrel positions two superimposed barrels on a single post fixed to the barrel bridge, their serial coupling through respective arbors eliminates both a barrel cover and the ratchet wheel, delivering a remarkable 80 hours of power reserve. A five-wheel gear train, two of its wheels running on ball bearings, fits entirely on a single level within the remaining space.

The watchmakers execute the finishing to Hallmark of Geneva standards throughout. The mainplate carries circular graining, the bevelled bridges receive Geneva stripes, and the upper barrel drum takes a snailed finish that harmonises with the satin-finished lower barrel visible on the dial side. Sunburst-finished wheels add visual contrast, and the micro-rotor itself combines circular satin finishing at its periphery, internal graining, and a polished compass rose motif at its centre, a direct nod to the Overseas identity.

The Case

The 39.5 mm case, bracelet, and folding clasp all use a proprietary 950 platinum alloy containing 5% copper and gallium, a composition still rare in watchmaking. A thermal hardening treatment raises the alloy’s mechanical resistance to 2.7 times that of standard 950 platinum, translating into substantially improved scratch and shock resistance. At 7.35 mm in total thickness, this reference becomes the thinnest Overseas ever produced. A transparent sapphire caseback provides direct visual access to Calibre 2550, water resistance reaches 50 metres (5 bar), and the tool-free interchangeable strap system offers three options: a 950 platinum bracelet with half Maltese cross links, a beige rubber strap, and a dark beige nubuck touch alligator strap.

Closing Thoughts

Vacheron Constantin limits production to 255 individually numbered pieces, each one available exclusively at the Maison’s boutiques. The Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin carries Calibre 2550 into territory where slimness and performance no longer require compromise: 80 hours of reserve from a 2.4 mm movement sitting inside a 7.35 mm case. That is precisely the result that seven years of development should produce. Pricing is available exclusively at authorised Vacheron Constantin boutiques, and given the proprietary platinum alloy, the limited-edition status, and the Hallmark of Geneva certification, expect a figure well north of six figures.
