Mechanical prowess and aesthetic refinement honour Chinese culture

Inspired by the year of the dragon and its rich symbolism, Chopard Manufacture merges the legends of the phoenix and the dragon with its expertise in tourbillon movements to present a pair of one-of-a-kind timepieces. For ladies, an ultra-thin L.U.C Flying T Twin model measuring 35 millimetres in diameter, adorned with diamonds and equipped with the innovative L.U.C 96.24-L flying tourbillon movement measuring just 3.30 millimetres thick. For gentlemen, a 43-millimetre L.U.C Tourbillon timepiece in ethical 18-carat rose gold entirely decorated with engravings houses the new L.U.C Calibre 02.21-L: a hand-wound mechanism endowed with a 216-hour power reserve thanks to Chopard Quattro technology. The precision settings of these two movements have been granted chronometer certification. One-of-a-kind models eagerly awaited by collectors, each of these creations boasts a stunning textured dial enhanced with Grand Feu enamel and hand-engraved appliques in a magnificent combination of black and gold.

Adopting a creative approach honouring the Swiss watchmaking Artistic Crafts perpetuated within its Manufacture, Chopard cultivates its expertise in tourbillon movements with this pair of ‘His & Hers’ watches, whose craftsmanship has been saluted by the Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark. The beauty of artistic mastery meets unparalleled technical genius, in keeping with the L.U.C collection’s philosophy born of Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s desire to perpetuate ancestral skills.

Swiss watchmaking expertise dedicated to an age-old culture

With its open mindset, Chopard Manufacture strives to celebrate cultures from the entire world. The year of the dragon in the Chinese zodiac calendar is the inspiration for the ‘His and Hers’ watch pair based on the phoenix and the dragon. These are legendary animals with supernatural powers and are charged with high symbolic value. While the dragon – the first creature to appear in Chinese myths and legends – represents imperial authority and wealth, the phoenix is considered the king of birds and symbolises renewal. Their association is an eminent sign of good fortune: as the proverb goes, “when the dragon flies and the phoenix dances, the people are assured of happiness for years to come, and peace and tranquillity are offered to all on Earth.

L.U.C Flying T Twin Phoenix

Richly symbolic dials enhanced by the art of engraving

The L.U.C Flying T Twin Phoenix and L.U.C Tourbillon Dragon dials are inspired by the symbolism of these creatures. Using motifs emblematic of Chinese decorative arts, the back of the dial in 18-carat ethical rose gold is coated in enamel before being lightly laser-textured to create an undulating pattern. The result is a blend of ancient craftsmanship and modern watch finishing techniques.

Traditional Grand Feu enamelling is a technique inherited from the 17th century, in which an Artisan applies a mixture of silica and crushed oxides interspersed with successive firings in a high-temperature kiln. Combined with the engraved decoration, the enamel creates an elegant backdrop for an applique in ethical 18-carat rose gold. This is entirely hand-engraved with a flying dragon or a phoenix with outstretched wings appearing above the tourbillon carriage positioned at 6 o’clock and bearing the small seconds hand.

L.U.C Tourbillon Dragon

Craftsmanship is expressed at the highest level, not only in the aesthetically refined dials, but also in the finishing of the gold case. The bezel, caseband and buckle of the L.U.C Flying T Twin Phoenix model are enhanced with sparkling diamonds, while the surfaces of the L.U.C Tourbillon Dragon timepiece are entirely decorated with elegant hand engravings based on the central theme of the dragon.

Innovative, certified tourbillon movements

Beating beneath these spectacular dials are two no less exceptional movements developed, crafted and adjusted by the Artisans of the Manufacture in accordance with COSC chronometer-certification precision criteria. Embodying the pinnacle of the watchmaking art, the tourbillon is a complication that enhances the precision of the watches it equips and requires fine adjustments that Chopard masters with exemplary skill.

The innovative L.U.C Calibre 96.24-L – Chopard Manufacture’s first self-winding movement with a flying tourbillon – is fitted inside the 35 mm-diameter, 7.47 mm-thick case of the L.U.C Flying T Twin Phoenix model. A flying tourbillon is characterised by the absence of an upper bridge. Secured from below, it is naturally slimmer and appears to fly as its name implies. L.U.C Calibre 96.24-L is only 3.30 mm thick, exactly like Chopard Manufacture’s first L.U.C 96.01-L movement from which it evolved. This horological achievement does not alter any of its fundamental characteristics: its diameter; its 65-hour power reserve powered by two stacked barrels, using Chopard Twin technology; as well as its automatic winding via a 22-carat gold micro-rotor remain unchanged. The L.U.C 96.24-L movement has a stop-seconds function: an unusual feature on a tourbillon and a personal requirement expressed by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, whose quest for precision requires time-setting to the exact second.

L.U.C Tourbillon Dragon

The L.U.C Tourbillon Dragon model, measuring 43 millimetres in diameter, houses the L.U.C 02.21-L movement, developed on the basis of the first L.U.C 02.01-L tourbillon calibre launched by Chopard Manufacture in 2003 and from which it has inherited all the technical innovations. This chronometer-certified mechanical hand-wound movement is endowed with a 216-hour power reserve thanks to two sets of two stacked and series-coupled barrels according to Chopard Quattro technology. The power reserve can be consulted on the back of the watch via an indicator located on the movement at 12 o’clock. Beating at a frequency of 28,800 vph, the calibre is equipped with a variable-inertia Variner balance.

Artistic Crafts: Grand Feu enamel and gemsetting celebrate the dragon’s noble allure

Around the aesthetic theme of the dragon, Chopard orchestrates an encounter between several of its Artistic Crafts, true to a design principle that is found on all its unique Grand Complication timepieces. Crafted in ethical 18-carat white gold, the L.U.C Full Strike ‘Year of the Dragon’ model first and foremost honours the skill of Grand Feu enamelling. A decorative technique practised since the 17th century and one of Swiss watchmaking’s most prestigious traditional Artistic Crafts, Grand Feu enamelling is currently perpetuated by just a handful of master Artisans, including one at Chopard Manufacture. The enamelling process involves mixing silica with ground oxides to form coloured powders that are dissolved in water before being delicately applied to the dial in thin layers. Between each application, the dial is fired in a high-temperature kiln for a very precise length of time. Throughout this process, the Artisan’s intuition and experience are crucial, with shapes and colours ranging from grey to ochre and beige gradually emerging under the effect of the heat. The dragon’s position appears to guide the reading of the dial naturally, its tail gracefully skirting the power-reserve counter.

Secondly, Chopard has chosen to complement this dial’s extreme aesthetic refinement by a bezel richly paved with baguette-cut diamonds totalling 2.74 carats, thereby perpetuating one of the historical skills of watch ornamentation and of the Scheufele family. “In this one-of-a-kind timepiece, we combine the expertise of our gemsetters with that of our watchmakers, reflecting our heritage in these two skills perfected throughout our history and backed by our longstanding experience in gemstone selection”, says Karl-Friedrich Scheufele. The bezel is rimmed with no less than 60 diamonds, thereby picking up the same visual rhythm as the minutes engraved around the sapphire crystal.

Chopard is honouring the year of the dragon in the Chinese zodiac calendar with an exceptional interpretation of its L.U.C Full Strike timepiece. This one-of-a-kind model is enhanced by the Artistic Crafts of the Manufacture thanks to meticulous hand engraving. From the openworked dial to the caseband flanks, along with the bezel and crown, the L.U.C Full Strike ‘Year of the Dragon’ is imbued with the symbolism of the Chinese zodiac calendar by means of unique motifs. It is equipped with L.U.C Calibre 08.01-L, through which Chopard Manufacture has been demonstrating its perfect mastery of the minute repeater mechanism since 2016. The dragon exalted by the art of hand engraving

This model’s entire case in ethical 18-carat rose gold, as well as its caseband, bezel, lugs, and above all the openworked dial, are engraved by the skilled hands of a specialist Artisan at the Manufacture, using motifs drawn from Chinese popular culture. Not one square millimetre is spared by the burin and chisel, in a meticulous process that takes more than 500 hours to complete. Resulting from some 160 additional hours, the openworked dial alone is a miniature work of art inspired by a jade pendant dating from the Han era. Like the latter ancient ornament, the dragon line-engraved by the Manufacture’s Artisans unfurls in graceful swirling movements. While brimming with finely executed details, the composition is no less ethereal. Technical elements such as the hammers and power-reserve indicators are seamlessly integrated, smoothly blending form with function.

L.U.C Full Strike 'Year of the Dragon’

A crystal-clear sound that is unique in the world

Equally sophisticated inside and out, this L.U.C Full Strike ‘Year of the Dragon’ watch beats to the rhythm of an exceptional movement developed by Chopard Manufacture in 2016. The L.U.C Calibre 08.01-L is a mechanical minute repeater movement which strikes the hours, quarters and minutes with timeless, crystal-clear notes. The glass protecting its dial, along with its gongs providing an audible indication of time, form a single whole. Machined in one piece from a block of sapphire, without any welding, screws or glue, it gives the L.U.C Full Strike watch a unique sound intensity. This as yet unmatched construction with its inalterable acoustics is the object of one of the many patents filed by Chopard during the 15,000 or so hours required to develop L.U.C Calibre 08.01-L: a feat acknowledged in 2017 by the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève which awarded the “Aiguille d’Or” best-in-show prize to the rose gold L.U.C Full Strike watch.

L.U.C Full Strike 'Year of the Dragon’

A patented strikework-pusher disengagement system

Minute repeaters are naturally exposed to the risk of breakage when mishandled. In order to provide the owner of a L.U.C Full Strike timepiece with a perfect wearing experience, its movement has been the subject of numerous developments that secure its operation. Reactivating a striking mechanism (strikework) while a sequence is already in progress can lead to breakage of certain components. To counter this risk, L.U.C Calibre 08.01-L is equipped with a disengagement system for the strikework pusher. When the watch is striking, this pusher can be activated at will without affecting the movement, from which it is disconnected. Chopard has registered a patent for this ingenious feature.

L.U.C Full Strike 'Year of the Dragon’

Perfectly secured sound

When the minute repeater slide is not fully depressed, the striking sequence may be incomplete and the audible time indication inaccurate. For this reason, L.U.C Calibre 08.01-L is equipped with a separate barrel dedicated to the strikework. It stores enough energy for 12 complete soundings of the longest time, i.e. the 32 strokes heard at 12:59 pm (12 for the hours, three two-tone sequences for the quarters, 14 times for the remaining minutes). The strikework will not be activated if the barrel has insufficient energy for the entire set of strikes required.

Moreover, the constant intensity of each strike on the gongs is guaranteed by this separate barrel. Finally, in a supremely refined touch, the time units not struck are skipped. This means the L.U.C Full Strike timepiece does not make a silent pause between the hours and quarters, nor between the quarters and minutes. On the contrary, it sounds them smoothly in direct succession, whatever the time. The movement’s strikework power reserve is indicated by the longer hand at 2 o’clock, appearing on the graduated counter topped by a bell. In the same space, on an adjacent scale, a slightly shorter hand indicates the movement’s power reserve, which is 60 hours.

Artistic Crafts: an extraordinary marquetry dragon comes to life on the dial

At the heart of the case in ethical 18-carat yellow gold – with its rounded shapes inspired by the hunter-type cases of the pocket watches once designed by Louis-Ulysse Chopard – the Manufacture has placed an exceptional dial featuring several Artistic Crafts. It all begins with a gold base on which an Artisan crafts a surface in Grand Feu enamel: a decorative technique cultivated since the 17th century and now perpetuated by only a handful of master Artisans, including one within Chopard Manufacture.

L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 'Year of the Dragon’

Combining traditional skills with cutting-edge techniques, the enamel then undergoes laser ablation to create a spectacular dragon in relief. Its twisted body is crafted using miniature enamel painting and enhanced by a hand-engraved gold mane and moustache. The horns are made from six different types of wood in micro-marquetry. Finally, the bead clutched in the dragon’s claws and the clouds through which it moves are made from mother-of-pearl. Orchestrating all these talents to embellish such a small surface is a veritable feat representative of Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s determination to create – with Chopard Manufacture – a centre of excellence dedicated to perpetuating traditional watchmaking expertise.

Artistic Crafts: a dragon entirely hand-engraved in-house

At the heart of the case in ethical 18-carat rose gold – with its rounded shapes inspired by the hunter-type cases of the pocket watches once designed by Louis-Ulysse Chopard – the Manufacture has placed an exceptional gold dial whose motif is a masterpiece of hand engraving.

L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 'Year of the Dragon’

Resulting from over 100 hours of meticulous craftsmanship, the dragon is depicted according to a tapestry dating from the Qing dynasty, viewed from the front and asserting its imposing, sovereign nature, majestic mane, front paws raised skywards and rear paws skimming the waves.

L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 'Year of the Dragon’

The reliefs carved into the material using traditional burins, burnishers and chisels are highlighted by a patina that gives the dial an antique appearance. The infinitely small surface area of the dial – less than 40 millimetres in diameter and just one millimetre thick – calls for surgical precision. The integration of this Artistic Craft is representative of Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s determination to create – with Chopard Manufacture – a centre of excellence dedicated to perpetuating traditional watchmaking expertise.

Innovation: a jumping-hour function with a generous power reserve enabled by Chopard Quattro technology

With its L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 timepiece, Chopard Manufacture presents its interpretation of a horological complication greatly prized by connoisseurs: the jumping hour. The L.U.C 98.06-L movement equipping this limited series is one of the few in this category of watches – which generally consume a great deal of energy – to offer up to eight days of power reserve. Thanks to the four stacked and series-coupled barrels based on the unique Chopard Quattro technology – which usually allows up to 216 hours of autonomy – the L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 maintains a reserve above 190 hours despite the amount of energy required for the instant rotation of the hours disc. This power reserve can be tracked using the indicator engraved on the movement visible through the transparent case-back.

Together, the four barrels comprise almost two metres of spring. In addition to providing a more generous power reserve, they ensure greater accuracy because the energy transmitted is more evenly distributed. The energy delivered to the escapement is more constant, as is the amplitude, thus enabling high levels of chronometric (precision timekeeping) performance.

Visible through an exhibition case-back, this highly complicated mechanical hand-wound movement guarantees reliability and precision within an overall thickness of just 4.85 millimetres. The balance-spring is equipped with a Phillips terminal curve that guarantees the regulating organ’s precision throughout the movement’s operation – a feat of which only authentic Haute Horlogerie Manufactures are capable. It features a swan’s neck regulator enabling more precise timing of the balance frequency and hence the rate of the watch, by helping to fine-tune the active length of the balance-spring. In addition to its technical benefits, this device also endows the calibre with a more sophisticated aesthetic.
